I know the old LucasArts game Outlaws first got me into shooters. Should boot that up again some time.

Well, my dad played pretty much every RPG under the sun, so guess which Genre I'm most fond of.
RPG: Icewind Dale was the first western RPG I played, and it was pretty good. Baldur's Gate was great, too.
JRPG: While still technically RPGs, they have a very different feel to them. Compare Icewind Dale to Phantasy Star IV, which is my entry here. Final Fantasies VI and VII would come later, but cement my love for the genre. (Is it wrong to try conjugating Final Fantasy like that?)
TBS/RTS: Heroes of Might and Magic III got me into turn-based strategy (which seemed pretty familiar, due to the JRPG thing), and Warcraft II got me playing (admittedly few) RTS games.
Gaming in general: Sonic 3. Awesome. The other (earlier) Sonic games as well, but this was my first game, and I still play it.

FPS = Halo: CE, and yes I've played HL, Doom, Quake, Goldeneye, etc. games even before the xbox came out but Halo was the one that got me into FPSs, never enjoyed as much with Halo than any other before Halo.
RPG = FFs, I've played 1-4, 7, 9, 10, 10-2, 11 (played for almost 3.5 years), 12, will play 13 and maybe 14. RPGs were fun but none of them made me feel emotionally connected with any of them but FFs.
RTS = Starcraft... No need to explain but SC > all RTS
Action = Devil May Cry 1, Dante was just too funny not to enjoy it.
Racing = Burnout 1. Most addictive racing game. 2nd place is Dirt.
Those are the genres I play regularly.

RPGs - my favourite genre. I first got into tabletop via a friend in primary school, then picked up "Baldur's Gate" - and that was it.
RTS - two of my friends and I decided to buy a game together, to have something cheap that we could talk about. We randomly chose "Command & Conquer"... been a fan of the series ever since, and played quite a few others, too.
Action/adventure - played a fair bit of "Tomb Raider" games in the olden days, but it was really "Prince of Persia: SoT" that got me hooked on the parkourish nature of modern AAs.
I also enjoy point'n'click adventure games (originally drawn by an obscure Polish game called "Książę i Tchórz" - that's "The Prince and the Coward" in Yourspeak), but the genre is all but dead by now, unfortunately.

I got into RPGs way back when Nintendo Power offered a subscription bonus that included the original NES Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior over here) game. It was the first RPG I played and I've been playing them ever since.

I can remember the very first game U played Oregon Trail and from that I have always loved being able to control and shape my character/party.
I love RPG's because every time you ply them you find something new which allows me to play them over and over, so I guess thats why I'm drawn toward RPG's.

Sid Meier's Civilization made me a PC gamer, but I'd already become a strategy gamer thanks to the SNES port of SimCity Classic (which remains the best version of the original SimCity ever made in my view). Koei had me in its thrall for awhile thanks to the Aerobiz, Uncharted Waters, and PTO series on the SNES as well (although their games haven't made any significant evolutionary steps since the SNES.)
I'd say Oblivion got me into Western RPGs but that's not quite right---Oblivion got me into The Elder Scrolls and not much else in that genre.

Well, I was PC gaming around the same time as I started playing on a console. It's just consoles were much more user friendly back then. There was no need to type cd\ d: run suchandsuchgame.exe on a console. I could barely tie my own shoes, let alone remember DOS commands. That reminds me...I need to find WinXP for my VMware so I can play Police Quest again.Snotnarok said:
The amazing storytelling of Final Fantasy got me into RPGs. And my love of FPS's came from the times when I was a child with battlefront 2 playing multiplayer with my mates, on the much missed PS2, and recently with CoD4, Halo 3 and GoW's awsome Xbox live battles.
Shooters for me was Wolfenstein 3d. Played that through about amillion times when it came out, then moved to Doom ect ect. Been playing FPSs all my life 
Red Alert 2 for my RTS though, only RTS ive ever been good at was Age of Empires 3.
Final Fantasy for RPGs sadly, I love them but I wish id played Baldur's Gate when it was released.
