How come the OP never comes back in these threads? Do they even read what we post here? Anyway, you can't really blame the times. Spongebob( a show I'm glad to hear someone else say they are a fan) has been on TV for too long. Writers can't exactly keep an excellence streak for that long. As for why a lot of shows you see these days look like crap, when hasn't it? Seriously, Was there ever a time where most shows on TV were good to you? You could probably name a long list of shows at the top of your head, but, I'm sure it wouldn't make up most of what was on.

So yeah, this thing again. It's like everyone on the internet needs to be handed a pamphlet on Nostalgia.

Young Justice is like a blend between Teen Titans, Justice League, and Batman Beyond and it's renewed my faith that cartoons these days can be good.

Transformers Prime is a bit darker than I thought cartoons were allowed to go and pretends its still for kids by including children in the cast.

My Little Pony is... well it's not as perfect as the internet makes it out to be, but it's actually still rather clever and well animated.

Clone Wars remains good whenever things shift away from the "main" cast as the rules are suddenly "Anyone can die" and "Character Development."

Ironman Armored Adventures got much better after the first few episodes, even if War Machine was a bit of a "What the hell?" moment due to the stance on weapons the show had.

Also, while a few cartoons in the day were actually really good, there were a lot that were awful (there's a reason you can't remember them now). Also, a lot more terrible gameshows were around back then for kids which have thankfully disappeared.

Hell, even the stuff I thought was perfect have caused a few problems for me rewatching them
Jackie Chan Adventures has a much worse first season than I remember
Static Shock has some great themes but not so great execution
Batman Beyond (is still good but) has dialogue that hasn't aged that well and rather shallow villains compared to the original show. Speaking of which
Batman the animated series has that perfect Batman everyone makes jokes about and suffers from animation quality shifts of massive sizes between episodes
Most dubbed anime I watched on Toonami was actually pretty horrible
Transformers... well, you probably already know about this one
Pokemon had more plot holes in every episode than I remember and plenty of problems with the main cast. Theme song's still great.

Hell, even Airbender has it's (few) faults (most of them in the first season when they were still working things out... but still). Still the stuff that actually seems to get a lot of polish these days is rather good, but the "shovelware" of television is still crap... it just gets more timeslots these days.

Watching cartoons from each era now, I think it's fair to say that the late 90s were indeed a highwater mark. However, every era has had its gems, and every era was mostly derivative mindless garbage.

Spectacular Spider-Man and Ben 10 are good in my opinion, and Arthur is STILL going strong.

I don't know, two of my Favorite Cartoons as a kid are both gone, and i wish they'd put them back on the air. They were
Conan: The Adventurer
and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
Tell me whats wrong with kids watching these shows?

Now imagine yourself in your 30's....

All cartoons you love will have have changed.

It happened to us....

The ones we loved as children are no more (except Thundercats which somehow managed to get a reboot and not suck giant hairy monkey balls).
You know what show I was thinking should be given the nonsucky reboot treatment? Swat Kats! You know it could be awesome.

I always wanted that jet as a kid.

Oh I still enjoy the first three seasons of Spongebob, including the movie. After that it just falls apart, though they occasionally produce the odd episode that has that old magic.

I don't think it's just nostalgia. FOr example i went back and started to check out some of the cartoons that were around as a kid that I DIDN'T watch when I was young (Powerpuff Girls and Megas XLR) and they're much better than most of the stuff that's put out today. Hell the best stuff around today (chowder, adventure time etc.) are only about as good as the average shows when I was young (such as Sheep in the Big City).

Agreed, all TV stations scare about nowadays is their money, and all we get is crap. Yes, I know this just nostalgia, but damnit, kids don't know what they're missing!

Still, it's not all bad. We got Phineas and Ferb, Adventure Time, Regular Show, Thundercats...

Perhaps I'm getting mad over nothing, but it irked me enough to write about it on the Escapist Forums. Whatever, if anyone needs me I'll be in the angry dome.

PS- no MLP recommendations please, tried it, liked it.
Nothing changed with the cartoon you just grew up. Thats all their is to it. When you were young you didnt notice how terrible it was, now that you are older you do.
I would like to point out secret mountain fort awesome. I would apreciate someone explaining how thats a good show.

I do understand that most shows are just different but that one I cant understand

I have to disagree with you there. I agree that it's basically now a well oiled business, and that business has to hit a set amount of targets no matter what, and that has taken away a lot of cartoonish charm that the show used to have, but I still think it's funny, and I'm beginning to see a lot of really mature humor in shows like spongebob, it's really, really advance stuff, that I wouldn't even expect a person of my age to appreciate.

the fact your 'pitying' some one for liking something you don't say more about you then it dose me for liking MLP.
this would normally be the part where i'd throw 'i pity you' back at you, but that would make me a lier, and i save that for people that actually deserve it

well getting older does change one looks at something, but are cartoon this day getting worse, not really, every gene as its gems and dirt, herews a few of each.

Gems: MlP:fim, Star Wars the clone wars, Generator Rex, the new Thundercats Teen Titans, Samauri Jack, and serveal others.

dirt: chowder(hated that show), adventure time (hated), the adventures of Flapjack(burn with fire) Reguler show(hate), and most of CN reality shows are good for a quick laugh or two, but don't really appeal in the long run to me, and why are they on a channel that does only animatated shows?

Spongebob Squarepants: after they did that 100 episode thing they should have taken it off the air, no series can go on forever without losing what made it great in the first place.

Theres gems, dirt and all in between, just need to know where to look.

In truth this is true for everything, theres gems and dirt in books, games, movies, etc. If you don't like something, go ahead, but if you say the entire group is like that, look a bit deeper and you will see that your wrong, and you might somethign that ye love.

Well, what made me really realise the change in cartoons was the shows "The Regular Show" and "Adventure Time" both of which are on Cartoon Network.

The regular show is pretty random and stupid...like most now. But, once it mentioned breast...and rigby even got trapped in between these large, disgusting breasts of some fat woman. I just think its wierd to see cartoons talking about breasts, kissing, and things like that....kids are too young for that.

PS: Don't even get me started on shows that aren't even cartoons like "Dude, What Would Happen" -_- (Pointless)
