I always get freaked out if I think about this too much because my mind just can't comprehend all the possibilities.

well, you start of by dieing.
eg. think 'black'.

now to understand my theory on this, you need to know what i think 'you' or 'i/me' is. XD
you/i/etc. is a cloud of shaped gravity or whatnot. look at it like... a work of art made oud of toothpicks and verry bad glue. XD when you die, the glue weakens XD and your artwork = YOU weaken. now look at stuff being born and needing a soul as small childen making an artwork. they nick each others stuff ceasslessly, just grabing and nibling what they need.
in other words, you could be split up over a colony of ants. or a raindeer, or anything else for that mater. the point is, it can also be a combined effort of stolen bits. *most likely* so you wont remember a thing, but there is a small chance, if your verry lucky, that ALL or most of your bits go into the same creature. such as a new human. this is why some people remember their past lives.
wow k, i'm running on about 3 minutes of sleep, so i have no idea what u just said
ST-DNU ( too sleepy, did not understand )
you are made up out of ten cookies. if one baby gets all 10 cookies, you reincarnate. if you split them, you wont remember a thing but wil reincarnate.

I don't know. All I know is that I have agreed the following with my parents:

1. All of my belongings will go to them (to sell, use - whatever), unless they can be of use to my little brother in the near future.
2. No flowers at the funeral, with the cheapest casket possible (unless I get cremated)
3. If I get buried I want to get buried under a horse chessnut (see: Conker) tree.
4. None of my organs will be given to people who need them.

That's all I know for sure in the event of my death :D

I'm not scared of dying, I'm scared of the possible pain inherent in the event of my death :(

Here's what happens.
You start off from your last checkpoint with two more lives.
What checkpoint? Well, save now or at an ideal point.
At game over, you can continue, as in reincarnated, or quit, as in after life.

You die, and are not aware of anything ever again, while the universe continues for billions of years. So many things will happen, but you'll never be aware of any of them.

Fucking horrific thought isn't it, I try not to think about it.
c this is y i dont like the atheist view of death......god i hate it!(see what i did there)
im not a particularily religious person but, i PREFER the idea of heaven and hell over the UR DEAD.... BLANK SCREEN version.
I also prefer the idea of ice cream and snacks for dinner everyday without it making me sick, and I prefer to live in a beautiful house old house overlooking the sea, and not having to work for a living, I prefer that too. :)

I imagine you'd just go back to a state of nothingness. Not even "blackness" as some would describe, as that is a comprehensible visual state...just nothing. Just like how it was before you were born. What were you doing in the year 1436? Nothing? What a coincidence, thats what I was doing too!

I believe in rebirth and that when we die we are reborn into any time, reality, and body. This could mean that if I were to die now (dont get any ideas...) then i could be reborn 5000 years into the future on a different planet where... I dunno Dragons exist? something like that. While I'm at it I might as well say that I think that everything has, is or will happen in another reality.

that'd be nice, or at least a nice idea for a novel, like Casca but..he keeps dying a lot.

yeah, that's what I'm talking about, too much to think about and no starting point except that you body doesn't function like when you're alive, otherwise endless possibilities... I'll quit before my brain explodes....

I like the "spectator mode" idea.

But really, I think it will be nothingness. We wont feel or sense anything that happens, no concept of time or decay. We wont even know where dead.

well, do research, if you find too many flaws in a religion that are major, just rule it out, don't think on anything you couldn't believe, i personally am rather open minded but i think too far into things, making my ability to believe severely flawed, i really wish i could believe in something, but i have an over logical mind. as they say, ignorance is bliss, just look at sarah palin, she's happier than a stoner who just found 10 pounds of pot for free, then smoked half of it (that's pretty f*ckin happy)

No one knows for sure. However, I have a pretty good idea - oblivion. Blackness. You simply cease to be.

Why do I think this? Neuroscience has shown that the brain is the seat of many aspects of our consciousness and mind. We know which areas of the brain are responsible for being able to talk, we know which areas of the brain are responsible for memory, and we even know which areas of the brain contain the sections that are involved with high-level thinking.

Although I cannot be certain, I think the evidence heavily suggests that you ARE YOUR BRAIN. You don't "have" a brain, you ARE your brain. All your memories are in your brain, which is why people can get amnesia after being struck on the head. Your personality is in your brain, which is why some brain-damage patients experience wild mood-swings (Phineas Gage anyone?), and the ability to talk or perceive language is in your brain, which is why some stroke patients develop Brocka's aphasia (in which you are still able to understand language, but you can't speak or write properly).

I am 99.999% certain that the seat of consciousness is in the brain. Once that's destroyed or once that decays, you're gone. The pattern of electrical impulses and neurons that make you, you, are, well, YOU. And once that's gone, you're gone.

What's it like to be dead? It was exactly like how it was before you were born. Nothingness. Not eternal sleep, because you're not asleep. Not eternal rest, because you can't rest. You don't exist. Think of all the things that don't exist - once you die, you're one of those things. There is no sensation of time passing. There is no black screen. There's nothing to perceive time passing or see black once your dead.

Understandably, this is why death terrifies me. I know some people believe in the soul, but that's an unprovable, unproven HYPOTHESIS with no evidence other than faith (and a few untrustworthy personal anecdotes. Hint: Anecdotes are not and never will be evidence. Religious people need to learn that aspect of critical thinking - just because your grandma says she saw jesus at the end of a bright tunnel is NOT SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE, or evidence of any kind for that matter) to back it up.

This. Exactly.

The only thing that bothers me about not existing is that I won't get to see what happens next. I'll miss out on "the rest of the story," as it were. (I always feel like I've been dropped into the middle of a story. The Book of Humanity, if you will. Sure, I can get an idea about what went on before me by studying history, but I'll never get to know what happens later in the story ... and that makes me hurt inside.)

And as comforting as it might be to think I'll get to watch the rest from heaven, or from a new body, or whatever, I can't delude myself into believing that. I can't help it, I'm just not a believer.
I agree, that thought probably scares me the most...just not being able to experience where this planet ends up.

In the off chance that global Armageddon does happen in our lifetime, I would at least feel content knowing how it all ends. Like catching the end of a good movie, as opposed to having to turn it off somewhere in the middle.
[sub]I think that might be a horrible and selfish thought...[/sub]

Well either you respawn (live another live with no memory of the previous.. sort of where really awesome Deja Vús come from), you get to the afterlife (whatever that is, I happen to be Christian so I guess I'll end up in hell for everything I've written on the Internet) or you just die.. All black.. No more fun.. You get eaten by maggots..
