Why would anything but death happen?
I'm quite happy living my life, it'll end and that'll be that.

your hearing becomes muffled, your vision crumbles away to a single point of light, your brain floods with dopamine, recalling many happy moments from memory simultaneously, your spinal cord stops sending messages to your body. Your brain begins to shut down, and after that, nobody has come back to tell us what happens next.

...but I suspect a GAME OVER screen and the option to start a new game or spectate.

Death is like sleep, except it happens when you feel a lot of pain instead of just get tired.
And then you don't wake up or sleep.

Chances are, nothing happens to 'you'. It's said that energy cannot be destroyed, just transferred. So your energy becomes food for bacteria and escalates into a massive food-chain which eventually becomes coherent life in another organism. Said energy comes from infinite other sources none of which is of entirely one being and will not have any influences from 'past lives' creating a perfectly unique existence like your current one.

Include breeding and evolution into the equation to make a thesis on the meaning of life.

Bah humbug, I've posted my views already but reading through these replies has irked me.

A form of grammar nazi anger; so many people are using the word conscience! That is not the right word! Consciousness and conscience aren't the same thing!

Consciousness is similar to sentience and cognisance, the ability to think for oneself and all that malarkey.

Conscience is something entirely different; your conscience is the thing you consult when you think to yourself - is that the right thing to do? Am I in the right here? In other words it is when you consult your knowledge and morals to form a judgement on something, typically a moral something. It sometimes goes by the name Jiminy Cricket.

This a question that plagues me always, infact its the main reason that i hope religion is right and why I want to belive in a benevolent higher power, because I want to live in an afterlife when I die, and not fade out not even controlling mself and not existing.

Buddhist: We get reincarnated
Christian [& other religions]: We go to Heaven.
Science: We cease to be.
Technology: There's a 20% chance we're currently inside a 'life' simulation a-la The Sims right now.

You die, and are not aware of anything ever again, while the universe continues for billions of years. So many things will happen, but you'll never be aware of any of them.

Fucking horrific thought isn't it, I try not to think about it.
c this is y i dont like the atheist view of death......god i hate it!(see what i did there)
im not a particularily religious person but, i PREFER the idea of heaven and hell over the UR DEAD.... BLANK SCREEN version.
I also prefer the idea of ice cream and snacks for dinner everyday without it making me sick, and I prefer to live in a beautiful house old house overlooking the sea, and not having to work for a living, I prefer that too. :)

I imagine you'd just go back to a state of nothingness. Not even "blackness" as some would describe, as that is a comprehensible visual state...just nothing. Just like how it was
before you were born. What were you doing in the year 1436? Nothing? What a coincidence, thats what I was doing too!
i still dont like it lol :(

I believe we are born again, either as a Human or an animal. We might not even be reborn on Earth, but another planet in the Universe as a member of a completely different species.
Why do you believe that?
I don't really know. Energy can't be lost, it's just converted into another form, like Kinetic energy to heat energy. So I figured it would be the same with the soul.

Eh? Of course energy can be lost if we're talking about it in the form of kinetic/heat energy.

And in that case, why do you believe people have a soul (in the literal sense)?

It's one of the laws of science that energy cannot be lost, only converted. When a book hits the floor, it's energy is converted from kinetic to sound and maybe some heat. The energy before=energy after.

I believe people have souls because that's the reason everyone is not the same. I believe the soul gives us personality, and then personality might come from previous life experience.

It's just what I believe, I can't really explain it more than that.

You die, your body ceases to function, and that's it. It's a good thing your consciousness doesn't persist after death, because it would be painfully boring.

There will be cake, and I stand by that statement until proven otherwise.

I'm just 21, but I'm actually looking forward to that fateful day... nice having something to look forward to :D

Fair play about the energy thing.

And I'm just interested in the soul thing because I'm a total rationalist, skeptic, atheist, etc. etc. I just find it interesting to know why other people believe in such things.

Well, no one knows 100% so even with all our theories we'll never know until we (the respected people with the theories) die.....I also believe none of this is real and I'm in a coma somewheres or something, or this is hell for whoever I was when I died.....if I did

I'm an atheist too, I don't believe in God.

It's ok, I enjoy expressing my opinion, I just wish I could do it better. :L

You pay Charon the fee so he can ferry you across the River Styx to the underworld.

Actually, the only thing that is for certain, is that you cease to exist. You stop living. All biological processes end. You decompose. You die. Other than that, it's an unknown. Maybe we come back as mosquitoes to piss off people we don't like, maybe we go to Heaven(if it exists), maybe we are resurrected on another planet. No one knows.

I imagine that you cease to exist. Of course for all I know we all have souls that move on to another plane of existance, but I don't know for sure. Although by the looks of it nothing else happens, but I don't think I mind if I were proven wrong.

Don't worry though. I die and I get the chance to tell you guys what happens, I let you know.
