It certainly would be interesting, but i think relationships across species would be the new big hit. As for the whole "2D can't be in a 3D world thing" Let's just say they'd work like Paper Mario. You see one side of them and when they turn around you see their back, just never their sides. ...and imagine how many girls and boys from the anime world who would be sought for right away if this were to happen over night.
