My question to the forum is what would the internet be like if the majority of heavy users were female?
*For the purpose of this exercise facebook is not being counted*
Most Internet users are female. Even if you discount Facebook.

If the majority of gaming-forum users were female, and it was a 19:1 split like it is male-to-female on most video game and nerd culture sites...

would the girls relentlessly hit on "zomg a GUY on here?" when an even halfway good-looking dude showed up?

We don't really have that problem on the Escapist---for the most part gender doesn't matter in conversation---but on a site like GameFAQs or IGN I imagine it'd be horrible.
Girls on GameFAQs? I think that's a myth created so someone have a reason to post "pics nao" every now and then.

My ex-wife is probably still a regular there---I haven't been arsed to look. I migrated over to the Escapist forums while I was still married. The community's better here. And the women we do have---well, the vast majority of them are beautiful, intelligent, and not at all concerned with over-acting the part of their gender. They're just people. Cool people.

less porn, more twilight fanfiction.

in all honesty though it wouldn't surprise me if there were more girls than men on the internet. it would explain why every nightclub i've been to resembles the sausage section of a charcuterie. all the girls are at home. reading twilight fanfiction.

I find it amusing that you seem to think that the stuff you like comprises "the internet" - trust me, there's a whole lot more out there than just gaming sites and forums - and that women apparently don't like porn.

Women use the internet for more than just Facebook. Get a clue.
Lol, Susan, what are you implying anyway? ;p

Anyway, it's definitely true that the gender bias the OP implies exists on the internet is unlikely to be true these days anyway. (even assuming it ever was).

As for porn... Considering some of the most disturbing things I've ever seen were shown to me by a 14 year old girl... Well, I think that says enough really. >_<

Less porn for one thing. Don't know how much, as I do know that women do like porn. But I still think that there would be less of it. Also alot less openly assholish behavior. There would still be alot of flamewars and stuff but they wouldn't take on the same shape as when its mainly dudes. Maybe a bit more mature (less "TITS or GTFO", toilet humor, prejedice), but it could still be hostile if you did the wrong thing.

So in the end? Probably much the same, but with a different feel. Less thick-forehead man stuff, more... well I don't know what women like that much but there'd be more of it.

They already are, I'm pretty sure. If not, the numbers are roughly equal.

In other words, basically nothing different.

It's not that we think women don't like porn, but statistics [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pornography#Statistics] show very clearly that they watch porn less than men.
Wow, by a whole...4%?

Assuming you unequivocally accept the statistics presented by a self-selection bias-suffering tabloid and a hardcore anti-porn site?

I would have to agree there. The community there feels so immature while this is is a more matured relaxed community with smart people for the most case. I don't regret leaving GameFAQs behind for hanging here. Me and GameFAQs just grew apart from each other I guess...

There have been other studies and that was the one which took the least effort to find. But I'm pretty sure in general that men look at porn more often than women. Of course this could be be very easily biased in the way that men would more readily admit to watching porn.

I'm going to go with her opinion. I think there really wouldn't be a difference. In fact I bet if it did happen and the 'rule of the internet' was: There is no men on the internet. I'd never believe it. The fact is half this world has women on it! So I assume half are on the internet as is! It won't really matter to anyone except ad designers.

Okay so that's the diffrence. The popup no one actually bothers to look at might be diffrent. Actually no! They track you so that the ads you get are tailor made to try and increase buying potential!

Come on, this is a silly question.

The internet is porn-driven.

Without men to buy it in droves (and pirate it), the internet never would have developed this far. therefore, men ARE the internet!

Speaking as a woman, and assuming you mean, "What if the internet was more or totally geared towards female users rather than men"... Less Visual porn, that is to say, no T&A and more written erotica. Men are more visual-oriented than women tend to be. Yes, there would be more Yaoi and less "Hot girl on girl action!" ads. I'd hope the "Make Penis larger!" Spam would disappear. More PinK? No, I'm female and I hate pink. Sad to say, there would still be idiots and haters- that's pretty much irrespective of age and sex. Women have bimbos, men have himbos. Etc.Etc.

So, not completely different, just different in aspect. Oh, less "My Dick is bigger/larger/better than yours" posturing. I doubt teabagging would have been started by a woman, and I think the internet might be a bit more inclusive of alternate sexualities, as most women don't seem to get as bent out of shape by homosexuality or transvestites or transgenderism in the way that some men do.
