I had a look-see after perusing this thread.

It's cute and kind of funny- I like it a lot and will probably watch it again (or for the rest of the day, as I don't intend to get dressed/move until I have to go to work).
I don't think, however, its as good as other cartoons that have been written with additional adult appeal. I do, however, adore Tara Strong XD

This is coming from a 26 year old woman with a genuine love of girly 80s retro crap who still owns her collection of original My Little Ponies.

Ok I watched the first episode, read some threads about the show etc and I understand how people would like it, even I found its cute charm infectious. However I have to know what the cupcakes thing is all about, I'm just one of those people that doesn't know when to not nosey at something!

I think I found it is this it perchance?

From what I've heard it's a graphic gore fanfic involving severe torture and ponies being made into cupcakes others eat, it's the inspiration behind a lot of the more disturbing pony images with cupcakes in. We are talking BAD here, like gets stuck in your brain and ruins both your day and the show BAD.
To balance that filth out and attempt to scrub my mind clean:

I looked for it, my god that was singlehandedly the most twisted thing I have ever seen from a fandom ever. I know a few people who that would destroy that character for them now all I can think is I wish there was a low orbit friendship cannon to love the hell out of it.

OT: Friendship is Magic is a wonderful show, I'm practically an old man and I rather liked it. But once I saw Lauren Faust was connected to it I gave it one hell of a shot and it didn't disappoint. All the characters the writers want you to love are well lovable and its none of that "everypony is faultless" bull hookey. It does have its cheesy moments but what doesnt?

PS: If you do look up that which wont be named, do so at your own risk.

That's not it.
I'm telling you now STOP LOOKING.
I read 4 words from a youtube comment and all I could think about all day was that. It terrified me.

I'm glad that the newgrounds link is not it because I have to say I laughed at that short fan made clip a hell of a lot as it completely caught me off guard!

As to what I seem to be missing, I am that person that has to know and I appreciate the warnings but I love analysing media and people's perceptions so I find the sheer terror that seems to be emanating from the various posts about not looking, all the more intriguing. Afterall whether right or wrong, good or bad in the long run, is it not human nature to desire to know the unknown?

Edit: Ok based on what people have said, I'm pretty sure I found it. If I'm right its a fanfic/horror story about one pony basically acting like Hannibal. Nothing particularly new in the concept of twisting something innocent into something truely revolting, but I can see how anyone with a sensitive side or faint of heart would find it too much. Don't get me wrong its not the sort of thing I would read ordinarily (more of a Pratchett fan myself) but still now I know.

Give it a few months and they will be beating a dead horse and then get over it.

That's not to say that there is anything wrong with the show or liking it, but it's not going to be this popular forever, just like all "fads".
Probably true, but mainly because in a few months, season one will be over and we'll be in the dry spell before season two starts in November(?). Or December. Late in the year, either way. Expect another popularity explosion then.
Possibly yes, or it might have worn thin by then and people will have moved onto the "next thing".
possible, but not likely, people wait for Idol to come back every year, and that show sucks
sides, not all 'fads' are doomed to fad away to nothing, Pokemon is a great example, the 'fad' is long since over, but its still popular, not to the same degree as before but it still has a strong fallowing, if the shows creators maintain the level of quality they have, you all may have to just settle in for a few years of ponies.

Nice job just throwing out the 'more gay people' comment, that's a really cultured response. Of course if men like something made for women it's because they're gay, just like how if a woman plays sports they're obviously a lesbian. Funny considering that the creator of MLP, Lauren Faust, pointed out how this attitude is exactly why there aren't enough good cartoons for young girls. Also, in her words, you're apparently an 'ignorant a-hole' but I wouldn't go that far. I just think that we're way socially focused on dividing things up into 'boy's stuff' and 'girl's stuff'.

It's a well-written show that is actually very self-conscious. There's a lot of social commentary about subjects like racism and xenophobia within it, obviously somewhat simplified for younger girls (if you don't believe me, just go check out the episodes about the zebras and the buffalo). It's an interesting take on a matriarchy as well, I think the weirdest contrast is that you see so few male ponies doing anything but manual labour. Also, it has manticores and dragons getting kicked in the face.

By the way, Cupcakes is hilarious.

And since people are throwing up awesome Pony videos:

Decent (not great) animation.
You can LEAVE, sir. Fucking GORGEOUS animation.

If I have a complaint about the show overall it's that the writing is fantastic on the character level, but on the plot level it smacks of people farther up the chain throwing their weight around and trying to enforce the little girl appeal (a sleepover episode? Really?), since Lauren Faust saying "Challenge accepted" wasn't in anyone's game plan, all Hasbro thought they were getting was more girl fluff to shill the toys.

Just don't read [reference redacted].
Ah! Why have you got to tell people about Ponydom's dark secret? You know curiosity gets the better of them eventually and that is just cruel!

But seriously Listen up: What she referenced? Don't search for it, don't read it, don't even THINK of it. While I haven't read it I've seen peoples reaction to it and we're talking BAD
And now I gotta search it. Thanks.

On the off chance you haven't already searched it, read the rest of the posts in the thread; I have one where I tell people the gist of it.

If it weren't against the rules, I'd be plastering these threads with MLP R34, just to be a massive dick to anyone who likes the show.

This MLP cancer has been spreading with worrying swiftness. It's kinda disgusting actually, how grown men and women have so been entranced by a gussied up, somewhat competently written campy children's show. I will now and forever refuse to have anything at all to do with this nonsense.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some Doctor Who episodes to catch up on.

Well, I think within the last day Ive become one of you folks. It started with random clips. Some parodies. Then I watched an episode. Then another, I work nights and It's 11:30 in the morning right now. I've yet to get any sleep because of growing addiction to these ponies. Oh well. Now as long as my roommates don't see me all will be fine in the world!
