Good Question..

I'd love to think it's the silence before the storm, as some say, that 2009 will the year of the ps3 - whatever that means - but meh...

I have a ps3... it's alright

not sure Sony has a problem, haven't seen the figures but i'm guessing they are doing alright, despite the fact that the "recession" is coming and all.. One would think that home entertainment would be the first to go.
Well recession wouldn't really affect the rich, because they already have enough money they can buy a ps3 and not care. While poor people would not be able to buy a 360 at all. Recession would actually help if it makes sense?

Sony currently not only has the lowest selling handheld, but home platforms.
Well, it's easy to say "the lowest selling handheld" when there are only 2 viable options out there. It isn't selling as much as the DS, but it has sold enough to be a viable platform to develop for.

But then you aren't counting competitors that bombed, such as the N-Gage, the Gizmondo, the GP2X...well, you see my point.
Isn't Apple trying to promote the iPhone as a gaming device as well.

Just because Sony's products aren't the best of the bunch, that doesn't mean failure. Last time I checked there wasn't some wierdo handing millions of dollars to the one who sells the most units.
A product doesn't have to be number one. There is no "winning" in business, just success followed by more work to keep it up. Just because you own just one console, it doesn't mean there can only be one on the market.

Then you obviously are agreaved by the lack of decent games outside of about 3 titles on your Wii.... after all, were your argument to be coherent you would have to own one as the 360 costs more...
Aha guess who's part right? You because I own a Wii with 3 decent titles on it, but I also own a 360 because I like games that don't suck. I'm cheap, but it's not just me. Obviously, I'm not the only one that doesn't have a PS3 for the main reason is that it's just too expensive. I know Blu-Ray is expensive and stuff, but it doesn't make that big of a difference to me.

Advertisements do nothing for me. Do you really think that most people who own a TV don't know what a PS3 is? Maybe advertising their games a little more, because I only know of like 3 PS3 games.

Hmm, I wonder what they could possibly mean by that?

Oh dear, I just dropped this picture on the floor! Silly me. Pay no attention to it.

EDIT: I bet FFXIII will push the ps3 past the 360 even if its multi-platform.

This is funny, it really is, 'I own a 360 because I like games that don't suck'
Granted, sucking is for the most part a matter of opinion but let's see....

Fallout 3 suck?
Bioshock such?
Call of Duty 4 suck?
Far Cry 2 suck?
Grand Theft Auto 4 suck?

One thing I do know that sucks would be having to pay every month on top of net bills to play online... funny the 360 never mentions that in their marketing campaigns...

Also, the PS3 has its costs for a reason - if you're too cheap to buy one, then believe it or not you're not the demographic that Sony is trying to sell to, and were you to actually buy one, they'd just consider it a bonus.

Now, that is probably the best/worst advertising I have ever seen. I think Sony just gained some credibility points from me.

The vast majority of people I know (who are not gamers) don't know what a PS3 is. If they've heard of one, they usually think it's a souped-up PS2.
So yeah, advertisements might help.

I have a 360 because I like games that don't suck... compared to the Wii. Also, all the games you mentioned are on both PS3 and 360. I like my 360 because it has games that don't suck. I wish I had a PS3 in hopes of playing more games that don't suck. I'm just bothered by the price and poor marketing, and you've just gone off topic here.

And, yes, Call of Duty 4 does suck.

Hmm... So only rich people buy ps3? From my understanding poor people wouldn't be able/willing to buy any console - yes the ps3 is more expensive, and logically it would sell less than the 360 - but still, they would not buy any console at all.
The recession, in my understanding, will hit most people - some more than others yes, but especially the middle segment of society. Although I don't have any demographic data on ps3/xbox sales based on "classes", I believe that the main sale, for both consoles, is the middle class, and if they get less money then, from my pov, it would mean more xbox sales and there by less ps3 sales.

I don't claim any absolute truth, what do you think?

I own a Wii and I was going to get a 360 but all my friends said that their 360s were messing so i came to think... $300 for a system that would probably crap out on me if i held it wrong OR $400 for a system that has a very small fail rate AND Blue-ray.... OH YEA

Woah, really? I have yet to meet a person who hasn't at least HEARD of a PS3, and I don't just mean online. I've never met anyone who's never heard of it, gamer or not.

The only problem is competition, mainly that the 360 (going first) got a whole lot of exclusive deals and a whole lot of fanbase while the PS was still in it's wee 2-stage. The 360 has more games, and, quite frankly, Much better games.

It's mostly preference, and most people prefer the games, the Live, the feel, the Rumble, etc, of the 360. Not to say there aren't sony fans out there, but with Sony getting games like Resistance and Motorstorm, it's hard to say that there's much that it does better. Yeah, it's got blueray, but at this point, you can buy a 360 and a bluray player for the same as a PS3.

Thing is, most people can't spend a lot on stuff anymore, and gaming costs a lot, so the most output for the least input is going to be the most efficient entertainment venture for the middle class american. 360 has more variety, better variety, and Respectable games: Halo, GoW, Mass Effect, Any JRPG, Fable 2, Left 4 Dead. Versus PS3 with what, MGS4 (which I haven't ever heard of after the release) the Persona Series (my personal favorite games), and final fantasy.

At this point it's just good to be rich and buy both.

Actually recently the 360 has had it's biggest boost in Japan recently and is outselling the PS3.

I don't know where you got the idea that it's just North America where the 360 outsold the PS3.

I'm in Europe and the 360 outsells the PS3 by tonnes, so out of the the major markets in the world all of them sell more 360's than the PS3.
Actually...

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 05th Jan 2008 to 22nd Nov 2008:
http://vgchartz.com/hwtable.php

Console-----------------Wii--------------PS3-------------X360
UK-----------------2,413,980---------831,122---------948,274
France-----------1,503,798---------632,084---------399,309
Germany-----------960,547---------428,938---------296,876
Spain----------------697,087---------603,053---------340,514
Italy------------------479,291---------335,137---------303,515
Scandinavia------360,436----------241,639---------185,592
Other Europe-----617,291---------681,658---------386,502

Total---------------7,032,430------3,753,631-------2,860,582

So there have been more PS3s sold in Europe than 360 since the begining of this year, and the only place it is the other way around is the one and only native English country.

Sonys advertising is hit and miss, sometimes the miss the entire point.(LBP.) and sometimes they make absolute golden advertising.
