either wofenstein 3D or original DOOM. wolfenstein 3d was the first fps and makes it a true hero of the type, but DOOM made the genre popular(and awesome!) and is really fun.

why has nobody mentioned Deus Ex i thought it was awesomeo
Agreed. Deus Ex is an awesome game. Loved it when I could kill someone after they opened the door to a room by planting a grenade on the inside of a door. And being killed after pressing the 'fake death' button when they try to use you as a human drink.
Although the millions of implants ruined it at times. :( Invisible war fixed that though. Wish that had multiplayer.

I would have to say either TF2, Metroid Prime + co. or a mix of Goldeneye 007 and rouge agent. Duel wield may seem obvious now but it was awesome when it first came out. And the multiplayer was so much fun.

Bioshock all the way. The game made me want more. The scenery brings you into the game while what the characters say and do almost makes you feel like they were a companion or bitter enemy.
Also, the game is freaky without looking like it wants to be. In FEAR, (Another great game with an amazing Al,) They send pop ups and crab running girls toward you. Bioshock's gameplay and scenery makes you feel like your in Rapture.

Far Cry. All bow before Jack Carver's sneaking skills! Who else could sneak in a jungle while wearing a red Hawaiian shirt?

I was going to say Half-Life 2, but then I remembered the Ghillie suit missions in Call of Duty 4, and then remembered how awesome that campaign was as a whole.

It gets drowned out a bit by all the fuss over the multiplayer, but CoD4 had an amazing singleplayer experience as well. I guess the game is popular for a reason.

Mine is battlefield 2 pc version. I love multiplayer games and nothing can beat the battlefield franchise for me.
Agreed, I wish someone would remake that game properly. Not these crappy rip-offs.
Seriously, nowadays Battlefield 2 is nearly empty and the new one sucks. Maybe the 1943 (?) will be good.

Oh, and it's a little hard to choose my favorite. I'll narrow it down to a few options though. Battlefield 2, Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty 4, Goldeneye 007, and Sytem Shock 2.

Definetely BLACK. It had some challenge in it and a nice (unskippable) story.
After that come all hl2 engine based FPS.

No love for any of the Unreal series? For me they've always been near the top. However, my vote is for Doom, just because.
Fear not, for I still play the original Unreal Tournament from time to time. Can't say I like Unreal 2 too much though, but only because it wasn't really Unreal. It wasn't a bad game in it's own right.

Doom, as it still entertains me even with the higher-tech games going on these days. Sometimes simple is fun. I'll extend that to Doom 3 as well (as it also had a pretty awesome atmosphere).

I suppose I'll jump on the CoD4 bandwagon, but I'll hop off before we hit CoD:WaW. Might get back on when we hit MW2 (who knows?).

Oh, and whoever mentioned the Darkness, I'm with you! Still one of my favourite games due to the opening cutscene alone.

Due to uniqueness I'm putting Prey up there, even if it got a little old towards the end.

Finally, I'll put up Descent II. My first FPS, and my current favourite. It's insane, and I'd urge anyone to go check it out (though those with motion-sickness might want to skip it).

Been done before, a million times, but for gameplay?

Cube 2: Sauerbraten.

Free and awesome, look it up and download it.
