Dream Theater. Bar none (in my opinion) the most talented line ups in Metal history. I mean John Myung is the most ridiculous Bassist i have ever seen. John Petrucci Can do Meedleys with the best of them. (see his G3 Sessions) and of course Mike Portnoy the man is a freaking metronome in any time signature ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhedP71N9gQ if you can count this your really talented) And Jordan Rudess someone who can blow your face off but then play a backing role when you need. Talent all around.

Jumpin' on the Zeppwagon.

If you have any issues with that, take 'em up with Brock. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CPkWtGbWdU#t=0m19s]
Remember, it's all about love, and longing... well yeah, and hobbits too.

best band to have walked this earth =p
Good thing SOMEONE mentioned them.
I agree 100%. A lesson on how to make music for 20+ years, evolve, and not lose your edge or integrity.

Honourable mentions to Symphony X, Therion and anything from Arjen Lucassen.

For me it has to be UnderOath, they bring so much emotion to the table it's crazy. I love it.

But, the band that jumps first and formost to my mind when I think, "Most successful band ever?"

The Beatles. Hands down.
Actually I believe Elvis Presley has sold more music than the Beatles, coincidentally I'm picking the King of Rock n Roll.

Black Sabbath, since they helped define the genre and gave us the godfather of Metal, Mr. Ozzy Osbourn. And their songs are effing awesome.

I don't expect Kino to get mentioned for a long, long time if this thread lasts that long, mostly because it's not popular among the non-Russian crowd. But within the Russian crowd, jeez, they're better than the Beatles, they actually caused major damage to the USSR with their message. More than 20 years later and you still hear their songs all over the damned place, at least in the Russian-American community I live in. There's a reason for that, too. So they're getting my vote, and not because of their political consequence. Their music is the truest, maybe not the most talented, but the one that connects with the listener the most.

I'm not going to vote for them, but I'm also going to mention DDT as a Russian rock group. To give you an idea of the popularity there, their lead, Yuri Shevchuk, started an argument with Vladimir fucking Putin at the dinner table and got away with it. They're also one of those groups that may not be the most talented, though they're certainly very talented regardless, but also connect with the listener. They use culture, folk influence, language play. I just don't see that from most of the rock and metal groups mentioned so far, but I suppose most people don't care about having petty things like "cultural influence" in our music, everyone wants to bang that shit out.

As for a band most people actually understand, mainly because there isn't a fucking language barrier in the way, I'm going to go with Motorhead, also because that hasn't been mentioned much, and they need their due.

This is pretty reasonable.

Though I personally believe that Led Zeppelin is the perfect criteria for any band looking for success, cause what happened with the Beatles is not going to happen again. The Fab Four came in at the right time and place, and I guarantee you that no other musical act will ever pull something as big as what those guys did.

The answer is clearly Pink Floyd. Fuck Van Halen, they are responsible for glam metal....what an embarrassment. In metal I would go with Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath :)

If he counts, Bob Dylan.
He doesn't count...at all. Just...no, he is the furthest thing from Rock. He's good, don't get me wrong, but...no. Just no.

My vote goes to Pink Floyd.

I agree with this 100%.

But since most people are listing older bands, I'll go for Sick of It All as my token "been around for a while" band.
