In no order:

TES III: Morrowind takes the cake, no questions asked.

TES IV: Oblivion (not as good as Morrowind)

Knights of the Old Republic (first one; second one was awesome but not as awesome, I thought)

RuneScape, before Jagex went the route of trying to take total control over the game. Go ahead, sue me for having loved it.

i agree jagex pretty much screwed the whiole thing od like an elephant on a unicycle

I liked a lot of RPG games and I can't remember what game was the best. Though if I was gonna rate a game for best ANY game of all time, my clear winner would be Starcraft.

Chrono Trigger is still my favorite. Chrono Cross can lick me where I pee.

Honorable mentions would be Deus Ex, Persona 3 and 4, KOTOR, and the Suikoden series... minus the 4th one.

I've heard nothing but good things about Planescape: Torment.

Planescape: Torment could have been a really close call, but unfortunatly for that game, its story wasnt as strongly supported by its gameplay, and it also had some terrible bugs. People tend to overlook those things, but I dont, and only ever place it above BG II when it comes to game storylines only.
Bugger.

Anyways, Baldur's Gate sounds cool too.
Oh, by all means its still a magnificent and unique game, its just Id recommend to anyone about to play it for the first time to be prepared for the fact that its not the most "comfortable".

I would definitely say its worth it though, make no mistake. Its just judging by its average sales when it was realeased nearly a decade ago, it wasnt entirely a game for everyone.

Hmm...It's a battle between Mass Effect and Fable: TLC.

But to be honest, RPGs arn't my type of game normally. I like Mass Effect because it was an RPG done really, [b/]really[/b] well, and I like Fable because its bairly a RPG.

I should probably clarify in that what I said above was actually about Planescape: Torment. At the end of the day really, both are shining examples of how awesome the infinity engine games were, and Id definitely say if youre going to try one, it wont hurt to give the others a go.

BG2 was definitely one of the best tactically -- some of the boss fights were quite thrilling, and had a decent story to boot. (It was also a very cliched story but, hey, it's Forgotten Realms...)

It's rather unfortunate that, as D&D moved to a system that was meant to be more focused on making tactical combat interesting (3e), the video games based on it (NWN) actually became far less tactically complex.

Final Fantasy 8. Despite its flaws, its still the one I enjoyed the most. While Chrono Trigger runs it very close and I have a lot of old RPGs to play yet, for now I stand by my choice.

Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door stands out as does Dragon Warrior 3, Rouge Galaxy, and Golden Sun. Ah, the good old days.

Mass Effect would be my favorite, but after I played Chrono Cross about six months ago, that became my hands-down favorite RPG. It's one of the greastest games I've ever played.
