I was reading IGN's article on "The Deadliest Diseases in Movie History" and started thinking about some of my favorite zombie movies.

Personally, I would have to say that 28 Days Later is one of the best "zombie" movies ever made. Also Shaun of the Dead is probably the funniest zombie movie.

Dawn of the Dead, The original, not the remake that was butchered by Zach Snyder.

Shaun of the Dead is such an underrated movie. Not many people saw it until it came out on DVD. Hot Fuzz is also pretty funny too.

I actually enjoyed the remake more. The idea of the infected being able to move quickly did it for me.

On it's own, it's a decent flick.
The fact that it was a remake of what many thought to be a much better movie though, was what made me dislike it.
I guess you could say is that it suffers the same fate as Dark Athena in the new Chronicles of Riddick game: It's biggest flaw, is association with something better.

I'll have to agree with you there actually. Remaking something classic can be dangerous territory. If someone tried to remake The Seventh Seal, I wouldn't even go see the damn thing.

George A. Romero's original Dawn of the Dead is by far the best zombie movie ever. It set the cliches that all zombie movies followed up until 28 Days Later came out (for those who don't realize, 28 Days Later is the reason why zombies in modern zombie movies run, before that zombies always shambled), and it was drenched in so much social commentary that it's not even funny. What makes Dawn the best, is that it isn't just at the pinacle of the genre, it's an excelent movie even when viewed outside of the zombie subgenre, outside of the entire horror genre for that matter.

Definitely Romero's original Dawn of the Dead without a doubt. To be honest, I'd have to re-watch 28 Days Later again to make an actual statement on it. I do know that when I first watched it I actually fell asleep believe it or not.

Well it seems I'm at ends with quite a few of you but I though the remake of Dawn of the Dead was fantastic. It incorporated most everything I expected in a zombie movie, which isn't much, and began the entire fiasco some of us have come to terms with known better as zombie survival plans. I've seen a few zombie movies, most of them are quite bad, and thought 28 days later was terrible. That being said aside from Shaun of the Dead which is arguably the most hilarious zombie movie, my vote is for the Dawn of the Dead remake.

As though the original's biting commentary on the perils of commercialism was actually all that great? Actually, I'll agree with you simply because of one point - zombies don't run. If a zombie runs it's not a zombie no matter what the movie tells you. As Zoe in L4D says - "I call zombie bullshit".

In all honesty though, zombie movies are a special category of film where it seems most of the entries are simply adequate entertainment. Rarely does a zombie movie fail miserably and Army of Darkness managed to fail so miserably that it became my favorite movie of all time.

Most zombie movies seem designed to annoy me though. I can't stand the fact that there is rarely an explanation for the sudden presence of zombies in the world. I'm irritated by the fact that mankind is so quickly overrun by a menace that ought be readily contained. I'm annoyed at the characters that literally seem to exist to fill some racial stereotype. The list is almost endless really. At least 28 days later, in spite of it's faults, managed to give me dynamic characters and a reason for a zombie apocalypse.

I'd have to go with Shaun of the Dead, too. It's a brilliant movie not just because it is funny, but because it is funny whilst still having all the hallmarks of a great zombie movie. It is scary at times, with the fear, paranoia, desperation, and over-the-top gore that any good genre movie can't do without.
