I'd say...
World of Warcraft. I went on a PvP server first time I played it.
And know what? That scared me. Outright bloody scared me.
I now happily play on an RP realm, far away from those lunatics.
... was that a joke?

A lot of games are Dark in various ways. Arkham Asylum dark in every variation of the word and many other games like pokemon are dark in a behind the scenes way. when all comes down to it I think the Ratchet and Clank series are pretty dark since it's full of jokes and sarcasm and no one seem to notice that entire planets get completely destroyed in every game. not to mention that one of the protagonists is an antagonist in the first game and the main antagonist in the second game. The second game is btw when he was directly responsible for killing massive amounts of the various planets population and generally f**kin up the galaxy.

BioShock: The undertones to the story, the small things that set you off or just creep you out (the escape bathysphere exploding, the Little Sisters, the audio clips left around) just scared you a bit if you let yourself get absorbed into the game.

Eternal Darkness - Sanity's Requiem: Completely screws with your mind, and the story lines are pretty dark.

Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth: Simply because I couldn't see a thing.

Resident Evil Remake - Damn, the RE series is great at making me jump. The GC remake just creeps me out though.

Are you just confused or is there something im missing in that game? It doesnt even look like it has dark (as in brightness) settings
you haven't played/beaten it then, at the end it has a dark, and very profound meaning.

I think it's a punch up between Fallout 3 and Bioshock. Both of them had some extremely dark concepts and moments.

I suppose I could say Silent Hill 2 but since I couldn't play for more than 2 hours because I nearly shat myself I'm not sure I can make an informed comment.

I might say STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, or the sequel. A whole lot of the game's mood sets off an atmosphere of despair. You're using half-working guns, it's always cloudy, there are monsters about with really perverted and disgusting figures, etc.
The game makes every person's death pretty depressing by giving you general background. You can talk to every neutral/allied stalker in the wasteland, and a lot of them are just average guys trying to make it. Seeing that guy die then sort of drives it home a bit rather than just seeing a faceless guy bleed. Furthermore, one thing that really hit it for me was the sort of agonized pain you hear from them when they're hit and lying on the ground bleeding. It's not really loud and screaming or anything, but just sort of a pathetic whimper, like "I want to go home".

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.

The title alone comes off as dark. Point and click adventure where humanity is extinct and the only 5 survivors are kept alive by a super computer for its sick amusement. Deals with insanity, selfishness, rape, racism, paranoia, and genocide (am I winning?). More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Have_No_Mouth,_and_I_Must_Scream_%28video_game%29
You certainly are winning, that game depressed me.

Any game where there is an airship that runs on power gathered by tormenting animals and has a character who suggests jumping into an ocean of razor blades automatically wins this thread.

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. A depressing twisted game based from Harlan Ellison's novel, on a messy tale of five characters as the only human beings left alive to be the playthings of an insane supercomputer, with the game covering such diverse ideas as Rape, Cannibalism and The Holocaust.

It's one of those games that transcends beyond being a game in the sense it can inflict upon you a deep sense of despair and horror in your soul.

Sanitarium, the first few levels. The game does a great job in confusing and depressing you, unfortunately it goes downhill pretty quickly. But let me tell you only one thing: first 'real' level, a regular '50s town, only deformed children inhabit it. One of them is a girl with two wooden legs who is rope skipping all the time.

Planescape: Torment.
It cant get much darker than that. Your a 'dead guy' who can't die, if that makes sense. In that world everyone is sick and twisted, the people are diseased, they eat flesh, sell corpses. It has very dark humor, it's pretty graphic and it describes murders, appearances and other stuff so detailed, that i once got sick by reading it.

Probably the underground labs in the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R..

Those frakking floating boxes still scare the hell outta me o_O
I never really understood what caused those boxes to float... It happened to me a few times in the Wild Territory as well, so I'm not sure if it's scripted or not (obviously the X18 floatiness was, but the other?)

If darkest as very dark then Doom 3 as it had the "no ducktape on Mars problem" and if darkest as dark in mood then S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC.

The floating boxes are caused by mutants called poltergeists they are practically invisible only somekinda electric disturbance is shown where they float (they have no legs)

Braid. Anyone who makes it to the end knows why.
Beat me to it!

Yeah, Braid is another dark game that comes to mind. Everything from the haunting soundtrack to the fluctuating backgrounds in the game. Plus, there's the alternate interpretation of the game...

"Harvester" was pretty strange.
Good lord, I had forgotten about Harvester. It took me a second to remember it was that game, but rest assured, the memories are in the front of my mind now.

Easily the weirdest game I've ever played.

Exactly.

And in CoP, one of the "new" (you've probably already seen it in the Priboi Story mod actually, but..) mutants also has that ability.

Doom 3. They forgot to put lights into their levels. Ba-dum-tish!

On a more serious note, I recall cowering all night after my first attempt at playing Silent Hill on my old Playstation. I distinctly recall feeling sick with terror as I ran from some monstrosities and the camera was reeling around overhead causing my character to stumble around.

An awesome game, it scared me so well I didn't pick it up again for years.
