Huh. Well, shows what I know. I really thought everyone used "couldn't care less".TomLikesGuitar said:Also, OhJohnNo, despite what Mr. British Rant has to say, "Could care less" is a worldwide conversational blunder amongst those who speak English, and honestly, it's one of the least important ones to exist ever.

Tell me a more important one then. I don't even know that much about language but im pretty sure that when you say something like this and your trying to convey something, even if other people know what you mean, what your saying is still wrong. I also love the way you've probably taken extra care in writing this out well so you dont look stupid.TomLikesGuitar said:[sarcasm]Oh shit nvm, you're 100% right... actually, every single phrase in the queens English makes perfect sense when compared to its' Anglo Saxon original dialect.[/sarcasm]Kermi said:Except saying "could care less" doesn't make sense, and will never make sense, and hiding behind "language changes" to protect your bad grammar is laughable.
Oh wait, no... sorry, I just remembered there's actually hundreds of butchered idioms dating back to Shakespeare that have either become a part of every day speech or have literally changed the language itself... And I'm not hiding behind shit.
InterAirplay said:And it's not like you have a sense of humo- wait, hold on... could care less has nothing to do with language changing, it just flat out doesn't make sense. I nearly fell for that. This has nothing to do with a sense of humor. It has to do with people listening to this guy banter on as if Britain speaks a language completely free of nonsensical colloquialisms, and then thinking that Americans are stupid as a result. Trust me, as someone who has been around the world, I can safely say that there is a large amount of stupid British people and there is a large amount of stupid Americans. Neither country is ACTUALLY smarter.OhJohnNo said:No, he's damn funny. And he's right that "I could care less" makes absolutely no sense. That said, I didn't even realise Americans used it, and can't see why.

People love to attack others for being smart, I swear. Go ahead check my other posts, a large number of them are written well, and the ones that aren't are in the more laid back threads with fewer grammar (and comprehensibility) Nazis. Unlike you, I'm not the type to just attack people on a forum for no reason, so I'll address your point with civility to make you look like an ass.RustyMcPlwood said:Tell me a more important one then. I'm glad you're the sensible type then. All I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't judge people's intelligence on colloquial grammar and/or reformed idioms. It's just a stupid never ending semantic argument which could easily be avoided.OhJohnNo said:Huh. Well, shows what I know. Also, no grammar blunders are really important so long as the meaning is still discernible. I'm just of the kind that gets ticked off by them a bit.
Take the language moral high ground then. I understand why you might pull something like that out of there to make a 16 year old look stupid, I in fact was being civil and simply told you what you were saying was wrong. It is perfectly acceptable for language to change over time or even change from locations, but it can never simply be wrong, it always has to make sense. Earlier on you used sarcasm to make someone else look stupid, you also basically called yourself smart, im not even sure if what anything of what your saying does make you look smart as it all basically revolves around something that is wrong.TomLikesGuitar said:People love to attack others for being smart, I swear. Okay, a more important butchered colloquialism? God, I hate being put on the spot... I'd say JFK's "Ich bin ein Berliner." ranks up there with the best of them.
And I never said that it wasn't nonsensical; all I meant was that language tends to develop in a nonsensical fashion. I can't really phrase it any better than that.
Hey, if I judged everyone's intelligence on their grammar blunders, I'd probably have relegated most people to "idiots" by now.TomLikesGuitar said:I'm glad you're the sensible type then. I was actually cracking up at the end when he brought up herbs, because that's always made me lol a little anyway.OhJohnNo said:Hey, if I judged everyone's intelligence on their grammar blunders, I'd probably have relegated most people to "idiots" by now.
I still wouldn't call "could care less" a reform, but as you said that's a semantic and rather pointless debate. David Mitchell's video was funny though, if only for the "graph of caring".

The last part of this statement is 100% untrue.RustyMcPlwood said:It is perfectly acceptable for language to change over time or even change from locations, but it can never simply be wrong, it always has to make sense.
Have you not yet noticed that I clearly dont know what im talking and are just playing devils advocate. I also find it funny that you clearly believe yourself to be more intelligent than me. Intelligence isnt measured on how much you know about language. Also love the way you call david mitchell a ''pretentious asshole who doesnt understand the most important thing about language'' even though he as a comedian knows how to utilize language very well in specific ways and has simply decided to use this particular phrase to great effect ( for example to irritate SOME americans who like you will get very annoyed)TomLikesGuitar said:This is simply an untrue statement, especially the last part.RustyMcPlwood said:It is perfectly acceptable for language to change over time or even change from locations, but it can never simply be wrong, it always has to make sense.
I can not clarify this enough. In fact the exact opposite of this statement is why language develops in such a chaotic form.
If you believe otherwise, I can not change your opinion, but we also have no common ground on which to talk.
Oh... how, um, cool?RustyMcPlwood said:Have you not yet noticed that I clearly dont know what im talking and are just playing devils advocate.
I never said this.I also find it funny that you clearly believe yourself to be more intelligent than me.
Never said this either.Intelligence isnt measured on how much you know about language.

Like I said, I never said anything about "being more intelligent than you."RustyMcPlwood said:TomLikesGuitar said:I never said this.RustyMcPlwood said:I also find it funny that you clearly believe yourself to be more intelligent than me.Maybe im making more assumptions here but...TomLikesGuitar said:People love to attack others for being smart, I swear.
EDIT: just saw your edit and had to add my own, you claim that some of his material isnt funny, despite the fact he delivers it very well and the material is good, which implies that you dont like it not because it isnt funny but because it makes you look stupid
And it only took Tom, who by the way is a smart as fuck (which im going to assume means he is as smart as something even dogs know how to do), 5 or so replies before he valiantly fled this extremely weak argument. And the moral of the story is that tom really needs to grow a pair rather than pride himself in the knowledge that he is smarter than a 16 year old.TomLikesGuitar said:Like I said, I never said anything about "being more intelligent than you."
I'm smart as fuck though, I'll admit it (I don't really care if doing so makes me an asshole.). If you aren't then... well hey, I won't say it.
Look, this is a stupid, valueless discussion. I'm done.
