I wanna be the guy. That game was notoriously unfair to players, every screen has some sort of little trap waiting to kill you a second before you reach the checkpoint, and if you play on harder difficulties there's no checkpoints at all. Frustrating, but addicting.

Okay, so it's certainly not the hardest hardest game in the world ever, but Z.O.E 2 was insanely hard at times for hilarious reasons.

One fun thing about the game is being able to play through with various unlocked mecha, but if you played with the strongest mecha, one boss battle became nigh-on impossible because you were too good.
At one point in the game a friend gets 'possessed' and attacks you, so you need to stun them, but you're so powerful that one slightly mistimed hit will probably kill her.

Kill...
AAARRRGGHHHH!!!

How about the gaming classic Jet Set Willy or its sequel.
Still never been able to complete it even when using a Spectrum 48K emulator which even lets you save the game!

Kids today and your save points! I remember, back in the day, it was only a few lives then back to the beginning and start all over again.
Now that was pull your hair out frustration...

Really, most games I ever played on the NES fall into the "nearly impossible to beat without cheating" category. Long after the NES launched and faded from public view I went back and beat a few of my favorite childhood games though.

Rocket Ranger - There was no save, pausing the game only buys you about 5 minutes time before the game shut down and there were a number of ways you could lose the game forever beyond simply being killed. Running out of jetpack fuel was one such way, failing to stop the alien military machine long enough to reach their moon base was another. The game had you running all across the planet disrupting the alien schemes but the only way you knew what was going on was through the use of a limited number (5) spies, who could be discovered and killed.

Buri Fighter - the most punishing side scrolling shooter I ever played. It's beatable because the game is nice enough to use a password save system but it seemed the only way to win was to play a level again and again and memorize all the secrets and enemy locations in advance.

Base Wars - My Favoite sports game of all time but the computer was nearly impossible to beat. By mid season they almost ALWAYS hit a homerun if the snag the ball. Your only hope for victory: get a few characters good at combat and try to disable several of their players while running the bases.

Megaman II - Fun as it was this game actively punished the player for having the audacity to actually try playing it. The worst part? Megaman ended up getting MUCH harder as time went on.

Simpsones - The game that pits bart against the alien invasion. Even to this day I can't get past the second level.

Ok, this isn't really a game, cause it's an online game, not a console or PC game, but "The Unfair platformer Game" is like impossible. Instead of timing you, it keeps track of your deaths. If you could beat it in one life you are probably clarvoiant. I couldn't even get past level 2.

Well I'd say trying to complete Ghosts and Goblins was pretty bloody hard, I mean you'd get through it kill the last boss, and then you'd have to do the entire thing again! But the hardest game I've ever played was definately the rom hack of Super Mario Brothers, called Kazio Mario World, bloody impossible :|.

Ikaruga, F-Zero GX Story Mode(Gamecube one)(I think I got to the last level and couldn't win)
Battletoads, and Call of Duty 4/WAW on Veteran... (Especially since it won't let me load any saved progress within a level...it keeps saying the data is from the older version...I have to do it straight through X.x)

Ikaruga, by far the most controller-snappingly difficult thing I ever played by the 3rd level, and that was just on normal difficulty. F-Zero on Master has always been able to induce tears, too.
