For me Dead Rising or Manhunt on Hardcore.
Dead Risings ocassional "brick wall" built into the difficulty curve almost kept me from beating the game. Most of the boss fights are incredibly brutal and end in your death fairly quickly. When you compare that to the light hearted hitting zombies with a baseball bat that leads up to much of that gameplay it's shocking.

So true... the butcher, supermarket owner and convicts were awfully tough... until you got the cheaty chainsaws.

Um, actually I remember Super Mario Bros 1 making me a very very angry kid too.

GODDAMN HAMMER BROTHERS!! AAAA!!!

I don't think that any game released in the past 10 years would qualify for this. Older games are so much harder and I doubt that many of today's gamers would take up the challenge.

Many hard NES games pop up to my mind and from the ones I've played more frequently, I'd say Contra or Castlevania. You know, many of those old games were actually quite short. Castlevania had like 6 levels only IIRC, but it took days to learn how to beat a level.

I never thought that it is that hard, it's just unfair because you die and you didn't knew that you are going to die if you do that. It's just like Megaman.

I still haven't beaten IWTBTG by the way.

.hack:\\Infection wasn't really hard, but it was just so TIME-CONSUMING! Every boss had to be killed by beating it to death for an hour (yes, that is not an exaggeration, I really mean it) then doing something called 'Data Drain', before beating it for another half an hour, before it dies. This is fine a couple of times but with the amount of bosses in the game and the repetitiveness of combat it just gets SO BORING! Not to go on a rant or anything (too late...) but I just thought it was hard to stay sane with the game (needless to say I didn't bother getting any of the three sequels...)

I know Mega Man has some tricky stuff, but this is about the most unfair comparison ever. It's like comparing apples to hand grenades. Though in this case the apples are actually worse, but never mind that.

I second I Wanna Be The Guy as I am still stuck on the last boss, but for games that are intended as games and not premature baldness inducers I'd probably say Ikaruga or Gunbird or any of a number of other bullet-hell top-downs. Just nasty.

I don't say that IWTBTG is as hard as Megaman. In comparison Megaman is really easy but the concept of dying is the same. Sometimes you can't tell that you are going to die.

Oh, OK. Well, though mega man does it far less frequently (IE NOT 12 times each frickin' screen) I understand. It definitely throws a few nasty ones your way. (Quick Man anyone? Eh?)
