The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES. You could beat the last level of that game only after you spent the required two hours collecting the 99 scrolls for each turtle, one level prior, which could then be erased at anytime after during the next hour or so of gameplay simply by accidentally picking up a lower level ranged weapon through random enemy drops, that had the odd tendency to just thrust themselves upon you. Then the final level deprives you of your map, and this is circa 1985 so there was no gamefaqs to find your way around, so you had to do it by trial and error, during which you face insanely difficult enemies, throwing in the possible loss of your most powerful weapon and if you die you warp right back to the beginning. And you only have four tries to get to the end and beat the most powerful boss who had a one shot kill attack. With no continues and no save function. So after a full non-stop eight hours of gameplay, if you douched it there you wasted eight hours of your life. I beat it once after months of playing and the ending lasted a full ten seconds. I wanted to kick puppies.

Sonic R...it's just so hard to play its so damn terrible and to me it ruined sonic as a kid.

you never said it had to be the difficulty that made it hard.

FX Zero for the GameCube, I couldn't unlock the third track. That or Call of Duty Classic on Veteran, since there are no medikits and it wasn't yet the era of regenerating health bars. Also Megaman 9, IS waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay harder than the originals like 2-3-4-5-6...

Anyone whose played one of the newer Dynasty Warriors games on Chaos needs no explanation.

For anyone else, imagine fighting over a thousand enemies that were all faster than you, dealt at least as much damage as you, with the same amount of health as you, at the same time, without stop. And every hundred or so a guy that's faster than you, has twice as much health as you, and can kill you in three to four hits comes after you. And then at the end of each level you need to fight a guy with six times as much health as you, who can kill you in two hits maximum, whose also faster than you while his five hundred buddies gather around you.

Oh, and their extremely fast attacks ALWAYS interrupt your attacks, and only your extremely slow attacks interrupt theirs, only on the first and second tier enemies mentioned, when the AI is feeling nice.

Oh, and since they outnumber you three hundred to one, when they dodge they're invincible, but when you dodge you'll just end up surrounded by a different circle of enemies. And if they guard you need to risk a slow, strong attack but if you guard there's really nothing you can do but wait for one of them to use a strong attack.

Oh, and they attack in formation, e.g., ten spearmen will line up in front of you and simultaneously use a charging stab attack, while ten swordsmen will line up on the other side of you and simultaneously use a jumping slash attack.

Oh, and your allies? They die faster than you, and that's hard to manage.

Basically you need to use a super move to escape each encounter with your life, and you only get uses of them from killing enough people, and random drops.
Sure its one of the most enjoyable games in the world, giving you more of a sense of accomplishment than any other game I've played when you win, but it is so #%@#!&* frustrating.

But I also must give these games credit for inventing the genre of games known as 'Like God of War but,' including God of War itself. Sure, God of War injected it with quick time events and changed the theme from slaughtering your human foes to kill a bunch of mythical creatures, but still. Who wants quick time events?

So if you ever want a game that can be super easy on easy mode, but is the biggest challenge you'll ever face on chaos, that's all just slaughtering legions of foes with no quick time events, play a Dynasty Warriors game. Chiefly 6 or 6 Empires, not Strikeforce, I have no idea what they did with that.

A Matt Damon game?

Sounds interesting.
Matt Damon game? What?
*looks at OP again*
Oh I get it, ha ha, good one!

OT: I really don't know. I can't even remember all the games I've played, so pinning down which one's the hardest is quite difficult. I know the original NES version of Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (or Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan) would be quite high on the list.

Demon's Souls ain't so bad. It's like Megaman. Remember placement and enemy spawns, and you'll do fine.

Well, 5-2 is evil. TRUE EVIL.

FUCKING POISON SWAMP!

OMG!! Forsooth you speak rightly sir. Most specifically, the Japan levels, fuck that was damn near impossible, nearly traumatic stress inducing.

Probably either ArmA, at least Operation: Flashpoint had the decency to ease you into things rather than starting you in an ambush. Or, Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back for the NES.

What are you people talking about, Mega Man, hard? Really?

Heart of Darkness probably. You fight hundreds of shadow creatures at ONCE and its a 2D game so they trap you in the middle everytime... Not only this, but after about 5 minutes playing you lose your gun, so its basically run for your life, but its still bloody good!

EDIT: oh! I will also nominate Battletoads. Jesus, if that was still in the arcade in town...
