However, I have one more very important thing to say about your views on Japanese culture. It's true that some things coming out of Japan are weird and creepy. But first, you have to remember that their culture and way of life is somewhat different to that of the West. So things that appear odd to us may be perfectly normal in Japan. Second, and more importantly, a lot of the 'creepy and weird' stuff is actually denounced by the majority of the Japanese. The weird stuff is actually a very small minority of what Japanese culture is all about, and over there is akin to the existence of certain niche-market weird stuff in TV and film over here. If there's something you've seen here that's considered weird and creepy, then there's probably more than a 90% chance that it would also be considered weird and creepy by the vast majority and general public of Japan, and was created purely as a niche fetish thing or something. It's not a good idea at all to have such a narrow-minded view of Japanese culture, and you certainly shouldn't assume that everyone there follows anime and manga and supports tentacle porn and all that sort of stuff. Because that is simply a massive and damaging misconception...

Title says it all. A friend keeps claiming Japan has the greatest culture in the world -- I need some really ripe, messed up anime as proof of how weird and creepy Japan can be.

I know they exist (all them 4chan-endorsed cat-girl fests 'n stuff) but I don't know the names of any of them so I can't just google them. Apparently

Regarding the phrase "messed up anime", not necessarily porn but I'd recommend Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, and it's spiritual successor, Umineko No Naku Koro Ni. Those two are complete mindfucks, to the point that if they had been made in the West David Lynch would be the director. Also, Serial Experiments Lain has something of a reputation as being really screwy with your mind, though I haven't seen it myself to confirm this (want to though).

As far as anything perverted goes, there are plenty of anime that have prodigious amounts of fan-service in them, though they don't tend to be anything especially perverted or strange otherwise. An example would be Elfen Lied (which is actually pretty good anyway, though it does have a fair amount of gore and torture in it...). For proper perverted stuff, I won't list or link anything here because although this is the internet, there are still young people who visit this site and I don't want to get banhammered. However, I will tell you that you can find a long list of dozens, if not more, of hentai anime, games and manga on the TV Tropes page for Hentai. Just go to TV Tropes and if you can avoid branching off on different articles for hours on end, search for the Hentai page. There's a list there. Also, note that I take no responsibility if any young kids see this post and do the same, because frankly if they want to find the porn they'll be able to anyway. It is the internet, after all...

Wooo, it's always good to see fellow fan of stuff . Elfen Lied was the first anime I ever saw that wasn't one of the 'kiddie' stuff like Pokemon and the like. Regarding Higurashi and Umineko, I'm still halfway through season two (Kai), I saw the english dubs of the first season and I'm still in the middle of the subbed second season. So I haven't seen Umineko yet, since I plan to after seeing Higurashi. Sadly I haven't played the games either and I don't tend to read manga, so I can't help you there. I've heard it's definitely worth watching though, apparently it's somewhat like Higurashi but on an isolated island and with a strong connection to chess, especially in the way characters play each other, so that could be of some interest (it is to me, at least )...

You get naked mew on the beach, why mew? because thats the sound she makes, also its the sound a cat is supposed to make in japan *Mew = Meow, its an onomatopoeia type word* why does mental retardation do this to her I don't know. The writer thought to himself "hmm how can I pass this character off as innocent" and within one minute of getting clothes and getting off the beach, she looks down out her shirt curiously showing us a tit. It tries to hide its perversion and that to me makes it more perverted.

As for the naked murder would you want to dress and undress someone that can tear you to pieces at two meters?
As for why she is portrayed as innocent, she is innocent she is not the same person that killed those people.
And yes there is a lot of fanservice but it is not purely for fanservices sake and many scenes of nudity are portrayed as downright disturbing, though I will admit that that comes across better in the manga.

Try to look past the surface before bashing something.

I'm sorry for getting defensive but I see far to many people make snap judgments about this series (and anime in genral for that matter) without even trying to understand it.
If you don't like it fine but don't make shit up and pretend that your hastily cobbled together opinion carries any weight.

No I went out of the way to watch the entire series, and I also went out of my way to establish that this was a horrible attempt of creating a dark anime and failed at creating realistic human emotions. You couldn't convince that a killing a puppy because someone is different as being a realistic human emotion, and the showing tit in that particular scene was anything less then fan service in a show that was trying to convince people that said series is deep.

Elfen Lied is violent, and has some nudity, especially in the first episode. It scares off posters like this one who can't understand how nudity can be anything other than sexual.

I have watched the entire series. and the only good part of the series was the 1 minute monolog at the end that the girl made at the end saying how sorry she was for murdering everybody. Though im sorry that I can't look past the fact that the only point that show was trying to get across was "don't bully kids they will murder you"

Or to put it in the way the series puts it.

I looked it up and there is indeed a character designer that did work on Queens Blade and Ikki Tousen (the follow-up stories of the original) but it doesn't say anything about Sekirei :/

Still, Sekirei is probably has more fanservice than most anime, but on the first episode of Queens Blade I believe (actually I've just confirmed it...to my horror) that an anatgonist of that episode squeeze white acid from her breasts. Yes, you heard that right.

Hmmm well cuz according to funimation the animator of Sekirei(whos also the creator of it) also animated the girls from queens blade and ikkitousen.

I mean both animes are about girls with bouncy boobs so it might be true.

I really enjoyed Sekirei cuz it was more than just boobs, it had a decent plot and had touching moments (especially the 2nd season).

OT: If hentais count, then we'll be here all day. I have watched my fair sum of hentai, and enjoyed most of it. But as the title says anime, I'll go with that.

Kiss x Sis is so damn perverted that I couldn't get through the first episode. If it were a hentai, and would have featured some actual damn sex I would have had no problem.

And Baka To Test To Shokanju can be pretty perverted at times. One of the characters is even called the Voyer Ninja. However the perversion in Baka to Test to Shokanju is mostly used for humor. And it's damn funny at that, so I can look past it.

It doesn't change my original argument, so it wasn't a sound a cat made it was still only used to make the girl sound innocent, but in a way that was obviously a coup out, but maybe im looking at it trying to find only the bad things, but right after I found that kids killed a puppy because a girl was different. Now this didn't offend me, but it made be re-analize the entire series because that in its self just felt like lazy writing.
