Title says it all. A friend keeps claiming Japan has the greatest culture in the world -- I need some really ripe, messed up anime as proof of how weird and creepy Japan can be.

Throwback to the 1800's! Look up the Dream of the Fisherman's Wife on wikipedia or something. Classic deviant Japanese art.

You don't need some hentai stuff to prove that though. Much of Japanese culture is racist with horrible, anti-individualism. The population is currently being divided into old people who are dying slowly, soulless white collar wage slaves and useless nerds who spend their lives wanking and spending other people's money. The nature is dead and covered in concrete, the politic situation is a nepotic mess and they are the "good guys" in the neighbourhood simply because they aren't the PRC.

Don't get me wrong, they have some nice art and fun games, but it's hardly the utopia some people seem to think. Try living there a couple years, it's fun but still has its flaws like anywhere else. I like it all-in-all, but not the best.

But for sheer mindfuckery, make him watch School Days. It chronicles the hijinks of "Anything that moves" MANkoto. It starts out normally, then quickly degenerates from there. Then you get to the ending... The ending actually got a delayed broadcast in Japan because of... events.

In fairness, I think Japan's tolerance of what some think is "weird and creepy" is a point in favor of the culture. I'm not saying I don't myself find some of it weird and creepy, but I appreciate that people can like things and even gather with like-minded people who appreciate various "niches" without necessarily having to feel afraid of societal or social rejection. That there's a degree of compartmentalization such that your hobby of perfectionist casting of tiny resin sculptures of mecha robots (for example) doesn't strike anyone as incompatable with your job in a respected corporation.

It certainly beats losing your job because some snoop found a mildly ribald picture on Facebook.
