What is the purpose of lingerie?

Generally I'd rather all clothing was on the floor, but I can sort of see why people like if they're taking it slower, especially for the woman. To be honest, I have very little interaction with the stuff so I'm not massively bothered, (although not because I'm not getting any, more because my girlfriend finds it hard to find comfortable underwear anyway due to the size of certain parts of the anatomy) but I know some people who are all over that stuff and have wardrobes full of it.
