... I don't like threads like this, I can't give a solid input because I've watched sooo much anime that I can't pick a favorite or even list all of the ones I really liked so here is a super short list:

Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Ghost in the Shell
FLCL
Clannad and Afterstory
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Wolf's Rain
FUMOFFU
etc....

My top favorite has got to be To Aru Majutsu no Index!
Great story and a variety of characters make it alot of fun and interesting to follow.
Can not wait for season 3.
My second favorite since it was pretty close was Natsume's Book of Friends.
Curses, I forgot about Baccano, the english dub was great and suited it well easily my third choice would have been second if they would just continue it...

I wouldn't be able to choose a single favourite, but my top 5 would porbably be:

Clannad (After story as well) - The characters, animation and the progresson of time and how the characters develop make this an amazing story.

Neon Genesis Evangelon (The regular series and the rebuild/movies) - Again, the characters and animation are great, but the action and underlying themes it puts forward make it brilliant, it is without a doubt worth watching

Elfen Lied - Even with the gratuitous amount of gore it is still an amazing anime, the story kept me wanting to watch more even though it was very depressing, it also has underlying themes that keep you thinking after you've finished watching.

Welcome to te NHK - Its funny, depressing and uplifting, once again the characters are interestng, the changes in the characters, and the dialog is great and well done.

Code Geass - Its very popular and for good reason, its got mechs, romance, action and a fair deal of other things. The plot and concept are unsual which helps it become a memorable story.

I like anime that give you something to really think about after you've finished watching... awesome action scenes or romance are good too though.

Well, I've got a lot, so...

Number 1 would have to be One Piece. Longest show I even watch anymore, great plot and amazing cast. Keeps me guessing and has tons of dramatic fight scenes to boot.

For the smaller stuff: Baccano and Durarara!! are both amazing in my book, for similar and yet totally different reasons :p

I also always like the calmer, less frantic anime from time to time so there's Ergo Proxy, xxxHolic, and Jigoku Shoujo, but only in small incriments.

and, oh yeah:

I. friggin. love. this. show. Muushishi. Watch it. Read it. Ginko is downright awesome :D

Ahhhh!!!! It's Ginko! :D I want to become a Mushi Master! lol. :3 I don't know many people who have watched this or even heard of it. :p I absolutely loved Mushishi.

Whenever one of these threads come up, and they do, with notable regularity, I always find myself as the only one to give this answer: Kannazuki No Miko. You may or may not have heard of it. Check that shit out on Wikipedia. And youtube.

It's definitely one of the better ones I've seen, although I don't know if I'd call it the best. It would be in the top five regardless (remembering that these things are purely subjective, and if you think they aren't then , but it retains the number one spot by virtue of having gotten me into the bloody medium to begin with.

It's shortly followed by Baccano!, which is an oft repeated answer on these threads for a fucking amazing reason. Kannazuki is something you'll either love or hate, my own experience is that there isn't a solid indicator for which you'll fall into, but it is a yuri, so if one decides to investigate, take heed. In Baccano!'s case, if you haven't looked if up, do so. It's not very long, and if all dubs were as good as it's then the subs v dubs debate would be over and the waps who insist on the subs on principle would be reviled as the hipsters of the otaku world. That justice restored, humanity would be yet another step closer to the singularity.

I would have to say mine is Sailor Moon! Oh hey, look! Today just so happens to be Sailor Moon/Serena's birthday! ;D But yeah, Sailor Moon and I go wayyy back. :) It's just something I don't think I'll ever grow out of! Sailor Moon is what got me into anime, and it was the first one I ever watched. :)

So, what is your all time favourite anime?

Okay, so Baccano! is really that good? I might have to try it after all then. I dunno, reading the Wikipedia page for it, it doesn't sound that interesting, and Prohibition-era US is a setting I really don't care for at all... Is it really worth trying out?
Yes. It's not the setting as much as the tone that makes it. It's hard to describe properly, my interest was low until I caught episode one.

It's on netflix if you got that, in the incredible dub, so check it out when you have the time.

The spiritual sequel, Durarara, is also fantastic, though it takes longer to pick up.

MONSTER, a vast and complex cast of characters, a interesting story line with plenty of twists to keep you engaged. To top it off it was the first anime I saw that showed me that the medium can be more than the shounen type anime. Not that there is anything wrong with shounen its just nice to have variety.

Its rather sad that I can rarely find people who have even heard of it.

This is followed closely by a two way tie between Kino's Journey and Mushishi. Episodic shows done right.

I could go on, but as the thread was all time favorite I think the top three is already pushing it.

Clannad. There are a lot of amazing anime out there, but this is the only one that made me cry like a baby. Multiple times. Well, at least until I watched things after it. The show kind of broke me, and now I cry in everything. It's kind of ridiculous, really.
