I don't finish a lot of the games I get and I'm just wondering what causes you to stop playing them.

If something is horribly frustrating, sometimes I'll put it down and forget to come back to it. Also, if a game has really bad gameplay, and I just can't bare the thought of slogging through it, then I won't play it. When gaming feels like work, it's not worth it anymore.

I've finished just about every game that I've ever played as it's my general policy to finish what I start. The only exceptions that come to mind are FFVII (game was mostly spoiled to me), GTA: SA (too long and boring, but I'll finish it some day), Sega Rally Revo (too hard), and Condemned:CO (too boring).

If it's a game I'm seriously interested in, the only thing that ever stops me from finishing it is the game itself. By that, I mean the disc gets too scratched up for me to continue on to the end or the like. It happened to me with Star Ocean: Till The End of Time, so I'm still trying to get back around to finishing that.

Bad shifts in storyline is a major one. Just outright horrible gameplay or not caring about any of the characters is another one. Extended breaks between gameplay can cause me to give up because I dont want to start over, but forgot where I was/what I was doing. There have been a few games that make me very motion sick. Only other real issue would be more interested in another game or if a new game comes out.

Reading others posts Im reminded of a few games I gave up on. GTA San Andres was a good example of a horrible game. Tried to be way to many different things, at the same time and in the end only managed to be crappy at all of them. That and RPG games like xenosaga. Not that its a bad game, but I have to enjoy the magic system or I'll drop that thing like a hot brick.

I almost always finish the games I start. Those that I don't finish, though, I usually abandon because I progress very far in one play session, and then forget to save/lose power/get a disc read error, thus erasing several hours of progress in one fell swoop. It's strange, but occurrences like that always leave me in a "Ah, screw the whole thing" kind of mood.

I never finished Oblivion or Fallout 3. Mostly because I would get to a certain point, and feel suddenly that I have to make a new character so I can be a mage/evil.

Normally, I get about 3/4 of the way through games, and decide that I've gotten as much fun as I can out of it. It's at that point that I:

a)Return the game to Blockbuster,
b)Move onto online play, or
c)Let it collect dust on my shelf.

Unless I am truly driven to find out the ending of the game, or if I REALLY want some award, (COD 5 Nazi Zombies, for example,) I'll rarely finish a game.

I stop playing if it makes me feel sick. That's why I stopped playing Mirror's Edge. Honestly, who decided it was a good idea to make a first person platformer?!

I keep getting new games or borrowing them from friends before i finish another and this will prevent me from finishing the previous game, unless its really good, like Fallout3, I couldn't stop playing.

I'm not an achievement whore for one thing. And also when it stops being fun.

for not finishing a game? hmmm... i guess because i always remember i have a life to get back to rather than focusing on getting better and beating it :p
