#1 - For me, without question, Castlevania Symphony of the Night. It was the perfect blend of combat, boss battles, exploration, puzzles, rpg elements and to top it off the game was massive. This game just had it all and to this day I can replay it any time and have more fun playing it than most big budget games out today. Not to mention it probably took a fraction of the money it takes to make games today. I need more 2d in my life these days.... :p

#2 - Noitu Love 2

Before I say anything. Go get the demo for this game right now at http://www.konjak.org/. It was made by 1 guy and it is amazingly fun. Awesome old school action. It also just came out recently.

Instead of writing about the game here il just link this good 1up review of it. http://www.indiegames.com/blog/2008/04/review_noitu_love_2_1up.html

The game is 20 bucks and worth every dollar if you ask me.

edit: any 2d games as long as they do not use polygons, not just platformers.

I'd probably say Donkey Kong on the NES. If that's disqualified, then Trilby (what, I don't play many 2D games).

Super Mario 3 is probably on the top of my list.
Then there are those bunches of SNES RPGs which are all excellent. Chrono Trigger, FF6, Lufia 2, ect...
Super Metroid deserves a nod as well.

I would have to say Super Mario Bros. 3, or Tetris. I have had my eyes glaze over playing Tetris. I don't play a lot of 2D games either.

Interesting quote from one of the SOTN creators.

"Ultimately, we incorporated a lot of new ideas and took the game in a more exploration-based direction. Since there hadn't been a Metroid for quite some time, we thought, why not try to make a better version of Metroid, but in the world of Castlevania?" --Koji Igarashi, producer of Castlevania: SOTN

I gotta give the nod to Super Metroid too because SOTN was basically the best of Metroid and Castlevania mashed into one delicious package, 2 of my fav games. yum..

Hmm, does Fallout or Baldur's Gate count?

Or any of the old Lucasarts adventure games - Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, The Dig

HELLS yes. Poor old adventure games. Doom pretty much took the BFG 9000 to that genre. :(

Fallout 1 and 2, Super Metroid, Skullmonkeys, Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey, Pandemonium, Another World. All of which I could play forever and not want a single other game.

Sonic 2!
I'm such a shill for that game.
The Metal Slug series is spectacular. Totally gorgeous, and with an interesting enough "story" to boot.
Are we calling DOOM a 2d game? Because then I'm inclined to mention it as well.
Also, Full throttle, and the like. It shouldn't be anything BUT 2D in my opinion.

I would say my favourites include:

Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles (When you stick them together as one cartridge! So awesome!)
Mega Man X
Ikaruga (it counts, right? There's only 2 movement planes...)
Chrono Trigger
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (I'm assuming that this also counts?)

Hmm, that's a toughie. Ikaruga currently gets my vote, but it's got stiff competition from Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Dynamite Headdy, Sonic 2, Super Metroid, Castlevania: SOTN, Shining Force 2, Zelda: Link To The Past, Yoshi's Island...

Actually, can't call it. There's too many.

I have more fond memories of Mischief Makers than any other 2D game. That thing was insane.

Yoshi's Island gets an honourable mention for being so impossibly happy. I don't think I'll ever be able to forget that theme tune...
