Im just going to throw out a few that I enjoy but never really get a chance to talk about.

Berserk: Great series, strange ending.
Bastard: Love this movie.
Mushi-Shi: Is kind of a mythical detective thing.

All worth a watch.

If Berserk and Outlaw Star count as obscure, then a couple of my favorite series can be brought up:

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - If you haven't watched it, DO IT NOW. Don't 'read up on it' or anything (too many spoilers to mention). Just watch the first 3 episodes. My favorite series right now. Just watched it the 2nd time through.
Vision of Escaflowne - First anime I ever watched all the way through. Still has a special place in my fanboyism.

Not obscure really, but I was one of the few that liked G-Gundam. C'mon! The Canadian Gundam is a lumberjack! That's freaking hilarious!

Berzerk was great fun to watch,

Mushi-shi was bizarre. I watched the live action movie and I didn't get it. Some of the story was the same as the manga, but it just kinda ended. Very bizarre.

I loved some of the stand alone story in Mushi-shi enough to buy the anime set. Also I agree that some of the episodes were just really strange. (Pointing at the ones that involved mushi imitating children.) I wouldent know what to think about the live action.

Speaking of anime gone live action, I just reacently got 'Blood the Last Vampire' Im gona say it was as good as the animated movie.

At least half of the animes mentioned so far are far from being obscure >< Hellsing? Soul Eater? Honestly, people, if you want to write your favorite animes, feel free, but don't call them obscure as well, if they are not. If you want something to qualify as obscure you'd need to have anime fans (like me) to not know it or at least admit they also think it's obscure.

Anyhow, just my opinion. I'd call Ghost in the Shell my favorite, but I don't think it's obscure. The one that does fit both the topic and my taste the most is Seirei no Moribito. it's both marvelously drawn and with a rather well written story and in fact, I had to look for its name by the name of the main heroine ;)

Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu, which translated isThe Jungle was always nice, then came Guu. Umm lets see, it's one of those ones that appear childish at first but actually tends to be more mature content, and makes you laugh with a warm tingly feeling inside like Azumanga Daioh. As far as I'm concerned this little gal:

could take on anyone in the anime world, whether it's the Super Sayan Goku or Haruhi Suzumiya.
