I can't really pick a side.

I remember watching Scared Straight, and then the reunion they had so many years later. Some of of the prisoners had been murderers, but they had turned their lives around. Though, they were about 50 or 60.

Then you deal with something like this and you have to wonder if these men could ever truly make amends for their crimes:

Absolutely. Every human is not entitled to life. Life is a privilege that can easily be lost, especially if you commit a crime against humanity (rape, murder, torture, cannibalism, etc.) If they don't seem to care if other people live, why should we let them? And don't give me that every life is sacred bullshit. I'm not hearing it.People who do more harm to the world than good don't really deserve a place in it.

I'm completely against it. The state commiting the same crime, whatever the reason, is unjustifiable. Not in my name.

I'm not a believer in the "revenge" theory of criminal punishment. More the "protecting society" theory, which is compatible with rehailitation.

I fail to see how a life of what's basically slavery (forced labour without freedom) in (US) prison is better than a quick death.

Death is irreversible.
That quite nicely sums up my thoughts. Keep them in jail for the rest of their lives, but death in exchange for death changes nothing except the fact that someone else is dead.

economics thats why i support it.
cheaper to kill them, as for moraly ok, well those are subjective, and if they did something heinous enough to be judged as deserving a needle well then why should we not give it to them?

Why do people say that the death penalty is a better punishment than life in prison?
All the legal shit they have to do for someone to be executed is tremendous and very difficult, putting them into a small cell forever and giving them shit food and keeping them under close watch is not only deserving of their hideous crimes but is also a lot cheaper, search it on Google and you'll see that it actually is a lot cheaper, I totally agree with Chronamut on this.

The death penalty is a terrible idea.
Actually depends on the speed at which the execution takes place. Mostly the reason why the Death Penalty is now banned in most places is because of the HIGH false imprisonment rate and death of innocent at the hands of the government not the cost of killing the person. The amount of money that the government actually has to pay out for appeals is what is usually added into the equation for the cost of the death penalty but for some reason not in the cost of imprisoning someone for life.

Like I said earlier.
The legal fees that follow from the death penalty are way more expensive in total than death row (search it up if you don't believe me), most serial killers would rather have a quick and painless death and don't learn their lesson, and putting them in a tiny shitty cell is a much more better punishment and will make the criminals go insane. Besides, a lot of Christians and soft people are really soft and dislike the idea of killing people, so you may as well make them happy by NOT having the death penalty.

TL;DR: Death penalty is the soft way of punishing criminals, and people are stupid to think that it's going to make really fucked up people who know they are going to be screwed in one way or another be sorry for their actions.
Most of the time the life in prison deal doesn't work out the way you think it does. They already know the ins and outs of the prison system by the time that they are actually imprisoned for life and are used to it since most of the people who get life imprisonment are repeat offenders.

@Badger: Oh, I've heard of it; I just think it's bullshit. All it does is make the process more expensive and time-consuming. The person has already been convicted; why in God's name would you want to make it harder on everyone and drag shit out?

Besides, one less occupied cell means more room to keep another complete monster off the streets.

Execution is irreversible, if you put someone who was innocent in jail, and new evidence comes to light to suggest he's innocent, he at least has a chance at redemption.

A Death row inmate cost more then a normal Federal inmate... So how can it help the Economic?

they are removed after a few years as per the death part and so end up costing less than the lifers.

If the indivual in question has used his time in prison wisely, made the effort to turn his back on his former ways, and in essence wishes to become a better member of society then I see no reason to forgive.

Yet, is the crime truly was horrific and the individual in question is in such a mental state that he cannot change in any fashion...I see no reason to waste tax dollars on the poor soul. End his life.

Then there is the grey area reserved for the family: Give them consideration in the end, talk to them about the man in question, and basically offer the life in their hands.

As a deterrent, it doesn't work. As a punishment, it is too kind. As an absolute, it has the potential to kill an innocent. And as an act that sets a precedent in society, it has the potential to inform people that murder is justified in the proper context, so I am against it in all forms.

Life in prison is just as effective.

@Zehydra: The odds of this are vanishingly small. Besides, the whole finality of it is the entire point. Remove these creatures from society so the normal people can be safe from them.

Putting people in cages for decades is cruel and unusual. We recognize this when we treat animals this way-- why are we so much less humane to our fellow man?

The prisons should be abolished. Criminals should either be rehabilitated in minimum security facilities, or they should be put to sleep.

This again?

As always, I do support it. I mean, why not? Murderers, serial killers, rapists... why should we protect them? They did the bloody thing, they should face the consequences. Besides, a death penalty should make less people think about committing those crimes, no?
But what if they have a mental illness they can't help?
I mean, in no way am I defending these people. But if they have a pre-disposition to schizophrenia or something, they shouldn't be killed. They should still be locked up, in a mental institution or a prison. But I just don't think it's right to kill a human being.
