My avatar.

It's neither dead nor dying.
That's Area 88 isn't it?
? My avatar is the mascot from Megadeth whom symbolizes the saying "See no evil, hear no evil, do no evil."
It's actually from the Pearl Jam song "Do the Evolution", it's the fighter pilot who bombs the shit out of a vietnamese village.

I'd probably go with two silver dollars or a loom with a string being cut. The Fates and all, you see.

boring old me is going with a skull, it's just classic.
but it has to be smiling because who says life is bad? the common idea is that something good happens as a rewards for being nice when i die.

Probably pictures of people with false expressions of happiness, because they are already dead inside. Death doesn't always mean the stop of all organic functions.

Nothing, by which I mean Emptiness. A lack of what one requires to maintain life functions is what Death is the final result of, so a big gaping hole in anything ought to do it.
So....

A scythe. Nothing fancy, just a simple reaper scythe.
That is a little funny since a <a href=http://medieval.stormthecastle.com/images/polearms/war-scythe.jpg>war scythe is much more practical for killing things. That thing would break once it hit armor.
Hmm. What was the title of this thread again? Symbol of death? Yes.

The scythe symbolizes death for me. Being practical for killing with has jack shit to do with it.

If you happen to think of a war-scythe, then it's your symbol. Not mine.

A Raven. From the noise they make, to their colouring, to the ragged look of their wings, they scream "DEATH!"

The scream guy dressed in black with that mask and a large knife. Yeah, I watched it when I was about 8, got recurring nightmares until I started to lucid dream and was able to wake up when he arrived. Watched it recently and it was hilarious, especially the cameo of the Fonz as the principal and Freddy kreuger as the school janitor.

I imagine a gardening scythe too. I was merely sharing amusement in the almost contradiction of it. I am sorry if you are unamused by the irony.

A silver coin/obolus, to pay passage to Charon.
There's a sort of nice poetry (I guess would be the word) in that. I am imagining a Scrooge McDuck type of person scared of a single unit of their wealth pile but not of the pile as a whole.

Visual depictions of death strike me as a tad silly. Death is nothing more than your body shutting down, thus making your conciousness grind to a halt. How do you depict that? A stop sign?
A void would do it quite nicely I think.
