To be a man one must have confidence, must think he knows more than others, must understand technical things just barely other wise he becomes a know nothing geek. Must not understand common things like colors, feelings, cloth washing, children and women.

Because being a "MAN!!11" is begin a grade A dick. ^^

What it means to be a man
A MANLY MANLY MAN
(there is a song about this and I would just look it up on youtube "ORGAZMO man song")
Womeon should not watch it because they would be offended and then come back here and nag at me. This causes me to go into a catatonic state where I just say:
Yea
OK
uhhuh
Your right

Please note:
"Sorry" is not one of the words

There's more to it than that, first of all you have to be considered not a homosexual (which on the internet is vaguely defined/increasingly offensive to straight people who do things that get them lumped in this group without even being attracted to the same gender), you have to not be fat (which is often hypocritical), not earn less money than your wife, and for some reason you have to be a fan of your national sports because if you aren't you aren't considered a man.

The above measures of manliness are ridiculous, and are no help to any man at any point in history. Because being a man is so loosely defined, peeing standing up or sitting down is but one facet of it.

Oh, and I pee standing up but I'm STILL not considered a man by many people's standards. Just look at my avatar for example.
Call me cruel, but a fat, broke gay dude, who hates sports is not exactly the alpha male.
A true man has to be in control, wheter it's a huge company or just himself. Someone who doesn't have control over his body or career is just life's punching bag.
As for the "real man can't be gay" thing... well, it's obviously unfair, but there is something to it. I mean a real man is a conqueror, he conquers women's hearts with the sheer power of his awesomeness, from what I've seen it doesn't work that way in gay mating rituals.
Kukul why have you been mean to me since the very beginning of me joining this site? It's like I was able to express my opinion openly while you were gone... without fear of being called not a man. I didn't say gay men aren't real men either, I neglected to mention the Spartans.
That's not being mean to you, its having a different opinion. Don't be so sensitive. It's fair to say you described an alpha male. Kukul just pointed this out.

When a woman insults a guy saying hes not a real man or man enough, she's saying hes not awesome in some regard, whether as a father, provider or not being in control.

I stand up to pee because its quicker and more hygienic. Its not just the seat, I hate how my schlong touches the toilet wall.

I hate all this "you left the seat up" crap. The toilet seat works on a hinge designed to be in the up or the down position with neither being in the "right" position. It simply depends on what purpose you intend to use it for. Women are equally able to put the seat down. As I do when I go for solids. If a woman in my household was unable to move the seat due to disability, as opposed to idleness and some false sense of entitlement, then I would leave the seat down.

Back on topic I have a coworker who is dominated by his wife and one of the gentle ribbings he gets about it is that his wife makes him sit down to use the toilet.

I usually think that you are a man if you have the male psychological gender. That's everyone with a %#&", give and take a few that are transgendered.

Being manly (or alpha maleish) however I think takes a little more effort.

Thought I'd like to point out that there obviously are more than one way to appear manly if you look at the diversity of cultures in the world.

Meh being in control and peeing standing is not necessarily manish, males have a certain level of sternness and strictness along with a sense of realism and pessimism. The strength and confidence that coems to mind when I think of a true "man" comes from that mixture.

Having to ask is not manly.
just accept it,if anyone asks, tell them you meesed up your back in something awsome.
if its a lady, assure them it still works in the desired capicity.

A man is somebody who does not run from his problems. A man is somebody that will give his all to protect the things he holds dear. There are 42 year old guys out there that are not men because they run away from things when they are hard. Yet, there are 17 year olds that are men, because they do not.

I think you can only really call your self a man when you don't need other people to tell you that you're a man.

In regards to the whole piss thing, I can't say I give a shit.

Being a man depends on the things in your head and the things between your legs saying the same thing. If that's not the case, the head is considered superior and usulally the thing between the legs gets changed to fit.

I'm a man by that measure, btw.

This is gonna be a weird question, but I got a reason for asking.

Now, we all know that we guys have one huge advantage over the fairer sex. We can pee standing up. This fact seems to be very important for a lot of guys, and it seems you must do this to even be considered a man. Throughout media you can always identify a man by the fact that he pee standing up. Numerous movies where some bloke is masquerading as a female has him being caught because he does this. And several shows and movies speak of men sitting down to pee as something bad.

Here comes my question: Do you have to stand and pee to be considered a man?

You see, I cannot do that. I broke my back in 2006. Even though I can walk and function like every other guy, I have found out that I am unable to control certain things as well as before. If I where to stand and pee I would have to find a mop. If I am outdoors that isn't an issue, but I am rarely outdoors. So I have to sit to pee now. Would people see me as a lesser man for that? Does anyone sit instead just because it is more comfortable? Hey, standing up is easy (or, was easy), but it sure is comfortable to sit.

Anyway. I know it is a weird question, and probably not that relevant. But I would like to see what you guys and gals think.
I hope that is rainwater dripping off your glasses...

Ah beat me to it.

What makes a man? Is it the woman in his arms, just cos she has big titties?

Or is it the way, he fights every day? .... Nah it's probably the titties!

You have to sit to read? Petty mortal, my skills are far greater developed. :p
Have to? No not by far. But it's more comfy, which is the entire point. For I, like Al Bundy enjoy the comfy parts of life, like sagging down in the couch and sticking our right hand just a tad bit down into the waistline of our pants and use the left hand to operate the remote control of the tv. : )

i sit down to piss for numerous reasons:

1. it gives my feet a break.

2. it gives me the opportunity to read a magazine for a few seconds, or play a quick iphone game.

3. being 6ft 2in it takes extra effort to aim in something that is 2 ft off the ground. i can aim, i just CBF doing it.

this is unless the restroom has a "tall person" urinal available. then i pee standing up in the tall person urinal.

"Of course not" is the answer to the first 2 questions and "lots of people do" is the answer to the last one. And they don't seat just only because it is more comfortable.
It is not a nature-bound action, peeing standing. It is nothing more than a cultural and social choice how this is done (and how this is seen).
When I traveled northern Europe a few years back I visited many of my friends' homes. I was requested, in most households, to sit while peeing, since it had been, apparently, a tacit social agreement for several years on.
This trend was repeated in various of those countries. And people were fine with it (women were actually very grateful), and their men were still men.
