I always have hated mages (playing them and playing against).
So usually when i play MMORPG i go for ranged dps whit bow/gun.
If i'm playing single player RPG i go whit tank class.

I don't tend to pick my class based on how it fights. I like to play the skill monkey. The guy we picks the locks, persuades the dudes, lies out his teeth, finds the secret passage, lays the traps, ect ect... If possible I like to do this with a caster, but that's rarely the case so I'm usually the rogue.

I find melee more fun and more difficult so I usually do that. I like warriors or rogues. But usually warriors.

Good crowd control and big AOE mage.. hold them at bay, and pound the living shit out of everything caught in your web, For dragon age anyway. You can die really easilly but trying to avoid certain death is half the fun.

I like to play as a ranged attacker, be it a sniper rifle or a bow and arrow to pick off enemies before they can come too close. If I'm forced to come into close combat, I like to be stealthy and quietly kill enemies before they can retaliate (I prefer long range though).

Dude, that's from a year ago, hardly worth resurrecting now.

OT: I used to be a hue fan of the Glass Cannon wizard-type classes, but Dragon Age: Origins is making me consider DPS and Tank type classes.

I don't think I really have a preference. Sometimes I want to play sneaky and resourceful, sometimes I want to stand back and heal/support or nuke, and sometimes I just want to smash things.

In Final Fantasy XI, I was primarily playing Red and White Mage.

In Dragon Age: Origins, my first and most enjoyable playthrough was as a Rogue.

For Dragon Age II, I'm planning start off as a two-hand Warrior.

Now mine's a bit unique

I like to use spells to do only a little more damage than your average melee while not taking my mana pool out too quickly.

then I train endurance

then I try to make sure my melee attack does SOMETHING so I can still fight after running out of mana

It's really hard to pull off, but if it works, It REALLY works

BTW this is in order of priority not chronologically

Sometimes I go for the mage class. Tons of tricks up it's sleeve and tons of damage but little health. However some games just don't pull off the mage class that well in which case I like the rogue/thief/assassin/archer type thing.

usually a jack of all trade guy, a lil bit of everything but not great, normally lean towards standard attacking (rather then magic or what ever is available) i like games that allow me to have pets or slaves, so i make them specialise in something, then me the opposite

I usually WANT to play the sneaky stealth option... but i somehow always end up on the big warrior who picks a lock by kicking down the door

In games with magical/technological healing and buffing (such as Dragon Age and Mass Effect) I tend to gravitate towards the healer/support characters, though I do have an aesthetic thing for archery and sometimes play shooty characters in single player games (such as Mount and Blade and Dragon Age again).

Rogue.

Checking and planting traps, picking pockets and of course shoving cold hard steel through the armor of my enemies.

Just another day in the life.
