We the worshipers of the Æsir believe that a real man is a man that can provide for his family, show valor in the face of an emergency(whatever it may be) and above all take responsibility for his actions.

that is a real man for you.
How'd you make the "Æ"?
its on the Icelandic keyboard along with Þ, Ð and Ö.

P.J. ORoarke, I think, defined the modern man as being able, with courage and conviction, to ask his girlfriend for $20.

I judge a guy on his willingness to go down on me.

Unprompted oral is what makes a real man ;D

No really. I do judge guys on that.
I love this answer: honest, to the point, and i have heard way worse, in my opinion. :D

I'm not really sure what makes a "real man", and quite frankly i don't care. I have much more important things to do in life than try to be a "real man".

This made me giggle. I suppose I'd be a real man in your book then. hahaha

Go watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. That'll teach ya how it's done.

I was sooo tempted to post the poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling. I recommend it. But basically, I don't think being a man has anything to do with sex, as you'd get from the poem. Go read it.
A great poem to be sure!

OT: I concur with alot of what's been said about patience, accepting responsibility, being honorable in all you do, loving, willing to fight for what's right, willing to admit when you're wrong, these are the building blocks of character that make a "real" man in my opinion. Anyone man can have sex, only a real man will remain committed to one woman. Any man can fight, only a real man will carefully and strategically pick his battles and not let anger rule him. Etc. Etc.

Just watch the movie "Secondhand Lions". Not only is it a pretty good movie (judging by the title and description I expected a borefest but was surprisingly amused) but one of the uncles has a speech about what makes a real man. I don't remember all of it but the basics are things like love, honor, and integrity are important above all else...uh...huh...I dunno, go watch the movie.
I believe this is the one you're thinking of: "Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; and I want you to remember this, that love... true love never dies. You remember that, boy. You remember that. Doesn't matter if it's true or not. You see, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in. "

A real man is subjective to the person in question. You won't ever find any one real definition for the term, because everyone has free will, thinks differently, and thus it's opinion varied from person to person. As long as your girlfriend feels this way about you, no one else should matter.

My own opinion is a guy who can convey his feelings, break the typical stereotype and actually like a girl for who she is, rather then how she looks. You sound very close to what I would call a real man, from what you said anyways. :)
Agreed the nature of the question is highly subjective. I like your definition too, it resonates with who I daily try to become more and more :)

A Miserable Pile of Honesty

Anatomically speaking, what makes a man is simply a Y-chromosome and, well, all the parts that are built from the rest of the male genetics(genome?). Dracula speaking, it only takes a miserable pile of secrets. On any other scale, the concept of "manhood" really is subjective. Some would judge a man on his words. Others would judge a man on actions. While I don't judge too much, myself, I prefer to judge based on a 70/30 word/action ratio, since from what I've seen in life, a man's words can deal far more aid/damage than almost any action (barring some actions, but that's why the ratio isn't more spread out).

Personally, I still wouldn't consider myself a "man" by my own standards, as for the most part of my life, I've hardly done anything to make a difference through action. As for talking, I speak what I feel, for the most part. It may be harsh for others to hear, but sometimes it needs to be said. I know that this will change later in my life, so I try to make the most of it now.

Hitler fought the damn world, while he may be evil, he was damn powerful (and crazy) he had amazing pull, inspired some hugo boss-designed uniforms and had access to entire armies. Hence Hitler *might* be pretty damn manly.

hitler was a one-nutted, vegetarian, art school dropout.

Confidence.

Simple as that. Nothing to do with what car you drive or how much facial hair you have or how many beers you can down in a night.

Standing up for those who need it and admitting things when your wrong, as that takes more cajones then doing something wrong. Also you can't be queer to be a real man...

I hadn't read that before, thank you for introducing me to it.
It's a short poem and I'll post a link for others.

it sounds like your GFs friend (I.E. the one who thinks you are not a real man if you are not drooling onto her tits 24/7) has the wrong idea. a Real Man (significant capitals) is one who can find the balance between perfect gentleman and indecent cad.

on a slightly more personal note I believe that anyone who doesn't smoke a pipe, shoot their own food, and is incapable of holding a lengthy discussion on the qualities of various whiskies (so anyone who would not fit in well in say a John Wayne movie) can't really claim Manhood. it's not about the sex it's about the slightly disdainful attitude towards women for being less awesome than Myself ... I mean yourself ... Himself.
