Tetris. Most definitely Tetris.
I'm not a Tetris player, but I'd venture a guess that the new versions of Tetris beat the old ones. Better presentation, better controls, more variety, more challenge, etc. I was never interested in the Tetris games of yore, but watching Arika's arcade Tetris renditions makes me want to play.

No; I prefer the simplicity of the original by far. The newer versions just seem to miss what made the original so much fun.
So which version do you prefer (surely you aren't referring to the original on the Elektronika 60) and how is it superior to the Arika versions?

Went on a nostalgic N64 trip not too long ago and was disappointed with how much Goldeneye didn't hold up, with archaic level design and controls. Perfect Dark however still remained awesome.

And my own submission - from the same team, lost classic Jet Force Gemini

Oh when Rare were good.

I'm pretty sure you knew that I meant the Gameboy version which (while being apparently, one wikipedia search later, not totally original) doesn't change much from the original like later versions. The newer versions have 'infinite spin' which I hate. It makes it too easy. There are also other aesthetic reasons for me preferring the Gameboy version, but I imagine they are just nostalgia.

MorrowindMorrowindMorrowindMorrowindMorrowindMorrowindMorrowindMorrowindMorrowindMo...

Also, Baldur's Gate series, Diablo series, Sanitarium, Monkey Island 1,2,3 , Grim Fandango, Icewind Dale, Arcanum, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Civ III, Heroes of Might & Magic III, Shogun: Total War, Cæsar, Deus Ex, The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, Syberia 1 & 2, GTA 1 & 2, Warcraft 1 & 2, Bad Mojo (trust me), Giants: Citizen of Kabuto aaaaaaaand Chessmaster 8000 (hell yes).

That was basically what was off the top of my head (and my top shelf)

I know, I have good taste :)
Yep, you do. Creepy how that list resembles my favorites, with that mix of RPG / adventure / strategy. No specific mention of Planescape Torment though... If you have more obscure recommendations, please let me know, since I appreciate that good taste.

I find it really strange that FFVI has aged better than VII, though I'd still kill for a remake.

I'm playing Chrono Trigger for the first time on an emulator and I have to say, I really am enjoying it. If it weren't for the default walking it would already be one of my favourite games.

64 Zelda's still kick ass, Mario too I guess. Ummmm... I can never remember anything when I'm trying.

Not that many, in my opinion.

A few that come to mind are the Monkey Island and Broken Sword games, Half-Life, the last-gen GTA games, and Mafia.

Just because it hasn't been mentioned as yet, and partly because I just finished playing through it again:

Jade Empire

Granted, many will disagree, but personally, it's just an all around great game, and definitely one of the better xbox games. Whilst other games (KOTOR) are arguably better, put JE against most RPGs of the current generations and I'm choosing JE.

Also, Flashback.

Being the backwards, whining miser I am, I have to turn that question on its head. Rather I would ask "What new titles can stand against old games?"

That I would answer with "not many".

I didn't know you meant the Gameboy version. That's why I checked out Wikipedia myself to find out what the real original/port/derivative situation was. I never played much of the game, I think I have tried NES and (some) PC version.

Even if the Arika TGM games have this infinite spin (?) feature, surely they don't look easy.

Republic Commando, yeah the graphics are getting a little old, but the story just keeps driving you through the game.
