BioShock did a good job wth melee. It wasn't a one hit kill unless you hit them in the head or shocked them first, and on the higher difficulties and later levels, even that wasn't a sure bet.
It the old quake days of shooters, melee was mostly a last ditch effort if you were out of ammo, like in real war. Shooting people was still much more effective since it took several hits to take a guy down, and you had to switch to the weapon like anything else, but you still could fight. Plus there was no "lunge." Some games had better melee weapons like chainsaws, but they still weren't "oneshot kills." Move to Halo and melee was changed to being a quick hit with one of your guns. Hits to the back was a one shot, but anywhere it still took many hits to bring somebody down, and they had to be basically touching you for the hit to land. It wasn't really until CoD4 that we truly evolved into "melee kills make you die if they hit your foot." With all weapons being powered up so it took little less then a second to kill anybody in the weapon's effective range, melee attacks had to be powered up to be able to compete. It had a lunge, but the most part was only effective as last ditch or a silent kill since again, a lot of guns can kill with two shots at close range with Stopping power. MW2 with Commando however really brought it to far. You should be able to bring a knife to a gun fight, but Commando allowed it anyway.Sup I said:Snip
