What place does melee really have in shooters?

I think you fail to realize that MW2 is an unbalanced as a ball of shit. In fact, it is a ball of shit.

Imagine a shotgun. It is always a one shot kill, with unlimited ammo and almost NEVER misses because it has lock on.
What.

You first sentences are already filled with delusions.

Melee? Well for one, if your out of ammo you're not defenseless. Two. Quieter than a gun. Cause there's nothing more pleasing then loudly announcing your presence to every single goddamn enemy in the area. Yup. Three. Humilation factor: OH SNAP MAN. YOU JUST GOT KNIFED. YOU SUCK(As in you suck so much you let him get within touching distance)

Edit:
Games are no longer shooters, but "games with guns if you want to shoot some one more then 5 meters away"
I fail to see how this is a problem. Perhaps you should try shooting the enemy instead of just whining about how OMG THE KNIFE IS SO UNFAIR.

Melee should be allowed as a primary or backup weapon, however..

I think there should be strength and skill options related to melee and that it's effects should be countered by an opponents strength, skills and armor. The damage would meet somewhere in the middle. An example could be like, if you wielded a katana, with proper training against an unarmed opponent then he should either die instantly or be mortally wounded. Guns should also have more realistic damage values, with only accuracy based on skill and damage based on bullet ballistics vs. body armor.

In short, I think game developers should use a more realistic damage system.

I am getting really sick of this argument.

The reason it is in the games is because it is a fun mechanic. For every person who complains about it, there is a good 50 or so people who like it and have fun with it.

MW2 does not have a knifing problem, it has the Commando perk problem. That is not a melee weapon, that is just a rather unfortunate glitch that was somehow considered a "thing" by the developers.

Halo:Reach has the new animated assasination thing going on, purely for humiliation purposes mind you as a regular back smack is still an instakill. This leaves the attacker vunerable for a second or two, and can even be interrupted by the victims team mates, who can even save his life. So what if ALL melee attacks had this animation technique, showing the attacker disarm his enemy first, jason bourne style, before killing him with....bare hands, knife, environment....but also leaving himself open to attack from others? Much more "realistic" in the sense that having a gun doesn't mean that your indestuctable, but that charging in with a knife/punch is also not a guarantee of victory either. The animation could even trigger an offense/defense sequence between the combatants, via a quicktime, or rock paper scissors type interface, meaning melees will become a specialist tactic that must be practised to be effective.

the best mele system I have seen was that of L4D (1)
You hit the guy with the gun and he pushes back, takes some damage and that's it
but for a perfect mele system...
I think it would work like this:
The damage delt with the mele is respondant to the size of the gun, and pherhaps if it has a blade integrated (a bayonet, for example)
If it is very heavy, mele time will be longer.
and may stun (if no blade is atached) for some time

Does anyone actually know how quickly you can pull out a knife? Because I can do it pretty damn fast, and that's without training. Having to equip it is moronic, why would you run around with the knife out if you can whip it out in a second and have a miniature cannon attached to your arm.

And, fun fact, Kevlar is little defense against knives. Kevlar stops force, not piercing. It wont stop a knife or an arrow. So a knife being a one shot kill where a bullet isn't actually does make sense.

I personally don't mind melee in shooters. And I don't get why everyone's so down on them. The entire point of a shooter is to not get close. To shoot them. So if you are dumb enough to get close and don't have a shotgun I feel it's perfectly fine that you get shanked.

I think you'll find you just described COD 3 melee system, get hit with a massive but slow rocket launcher and your gone, take a punch by a pistol wielding foe, your still ok to shoot him dead. Halo too has this "melee rated" system where things like brute shots do alot more damage than BR's, although it was much more noticable in halo2 than in halo3.

I stopped wielding knifes for one simple reason, I carry this knife chucker that chucks around 600 knifes a second, you just put the end with the hole towards an enemy head and it can kill from 2-500 meters away. oh, and I don't have to worry about the enemy moving because if I miss I just chuck more till they die.

Oh and the great part, I don't have to lob these knifes, they are so strong, they defy physics.

Well, when a guy is in your face its rather nice to smack em. Its annoying in Rainbow Six when melee would be useful. Dont want to be smacked? Back off. Melee should stay. This thread is not even about melee. Its about balance.
