What series should be the "mascot" for JRPGs?

I'd prefer if there WASN'T a mascot series as it were. I wish all the games could just stand on their own merits.

I would love Shin Megami Tensei to be the mascot of JRPGs, but its going to have to be Final Fantasy. It's more recognisable and SMT becoming mainstream would probably invoke the whole "BLARGH VIDEO GAMES ARE BAD FOR YOUR KIDS" argument.

What about this one? Can't imagine why anyone wouldn't like it- *shot by random assasin sent by square enix for mentioning "The Forbidden Game"*

In a perfect world I wish that would be the case but the entirety of Jrpgs to me are as a whole a standard afair now. Personally one of my faveourite Jrpgs is Infinate Undiscovery, in my eyes it didnt sacrifice gameplay for story, you were Capell, you were never taken to a seperate land in space and time to have ever single fight and didnt have to tell elveryone else in your party what to do, don't get me wrong as a whole I actually enjoy turn based combat but it really taked me out of it a bit.

OT: The Tales of series I love, I Played Symphonia and haven't looked back.

we all know only final fantasy can be the mascot for JRPGs
love it or hate it, it's still the most popular and well known out there

If it were Monday, I would say Golden Sun. But since it's not, Fire Emblem has quite a few JRPG tropes without being too cliche.
I concur, Golden Sun was superb game, and it didn't require high budget cut scenes to tell a great story.

OH DEAR GOD.

If the mainstream media got wind of SMT, games would be banned forever.

I would third or fourth SMT

Seeing how SMT tends to have multiple spin offs and that opens up quite a few options for different people ,and it usually subverts JRPG conventions.Though something tells me summoning Lucifer and killing God in a game would not sit right with some.To say the least.

People need to get this idea that JRPG's need to evolve out of their heads. JRPG's have evolved too much already to satisfy complainers who don't play JRPG's anyway.

Ever notice how JRPG's sell well on the DS but not well on the consoles? The DS (and GBA) has ports of older JRPG's while the console have these new "evolved" JRPG's. It seems clear that more people prefer the older JRPG's to the newer ones.
I disagree. Every genre needs to evolve else we'd be playing the same game, over, and over, which is what a lot of genres have fallen into. Starcraft 2, Call of Duty, has been proof of it. Infact I'd argue that's why I don't purchase said DS rpgs, the other reason being I'm not big on handheld gaming.

Oh, and chances are the only reason why they may seem to sell more on DS is because more people own a DS.

Ontopic, there shouldn't be a mascot for JRPGs. Each series has it's own merits.

Actual interaction in combat with a great story, I'd say it still holds up strong today.

Failing that, something more modern wouldn't be out of the question

Persona, Wild Arms, Shin Megami...Finally Fantasy and Lost Odyssey are both of the 'cliche' school of ganmes.

Honestly, how is a Queen/Princess wearing a slutty outfit, and is able to save everyone yet dies in game combat is beyond '3.4 wall breaking'.

Hmmm... Persona represents JRPG´s pretty well. I´d pick that one.

But FF is king of JRPG´s and its rightful mascot.

Despite Final Fantasy going down the shitter to most of it's own die hard fans I'd probably have to still stick with them and just pray to Thor that the games start being good again.
