So I've been less than attentive to these here forums for the past week or so and I have returned to find it in a rather... horrendous state. Yeah, yeah flavor of the month, ME3 ending, blah, blah, blah. I get that. My confusion and disappointment is coming from this ugly schism in the community. Seriously guys, why the fuck is everyone getting so worked up over this debate? Some people want Bioware to change/add to the ending. Okay, whoopdy-doo. Is it really worth turning this forum into the ultimate fanboy knife fight in order to get your point across?

This goes for both sides of the argument. I can't even count the number of times I have read the words "entitled" in the last two weeks. Since when was this such a dirty word and why are you guys treating this like its some kind of enormous insult. "Entitled" =/= spoiled/whiny consumer. Don't use it that way and don't assume that is what people are saying when they use it. This used to be a community where we could have intelligent discussions about the industry and our favorite games/developers. Now its just a bunch of uninformed, bitter gamers having it out over what amounts to nothing more than a simple little hot topic that no one will care about two months from now. Is it really worth it guys?

I'm not asking people to stop discussing this big issue. I am asking people to stop stating their opinions as fact and start keeping an open mind, otherwise we'll just end up like every other gaming forum on the internet. I just hope its not too late.

/rant off

I feel better now :D

It's not that bad.

Most of the actual nastiness is being generated by a handful of individuals. (No prizes for guessing who.)

The rest is just disappointment and bitterness.

I almost (note, almost) wish the game had been entirely bad from beginning to end. Instead we got a fantastic game that waits until the last ten bloody minutes to shit itself inside out and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

It will pass. It's just everyone is worked up over ME3. Yes everyone is overeacting, yes each side has it's share of stupidity.

I tend to side with the ones who are annoyed with Bioware but it's not too bad. Hopefully it will pass eventully but untill then we must put up with all of the mass effect topics.

People are dissatisfied with EAWare -> EAWare and gaming media try to sweep complaints under the rug. -> People express their dissatisfaction ten times as arduously

Really, that's what's fueling the fire. Just like with DA2, faced with valid criticisms, instead of owning up, they still try to play it off as 10/10 RPG of the year.

And people have had enough of playing along.

I agree with people being disappointed about Bioware not living up to their promises...

...but really, the best thing is to just to express our disappointment to them and not buy their next product until they shape up.

I think that's the general message the "Take Back Movement" is trying to send. Unfortunately too many people think expressing disappointment = whining. It also doesn't help that people who hate the endings believe those who like them don't have valid opinions. >.>

You're right. Tempers have flared, and I probably got drawn into the fray due to being pissed off at the number of people complaining about ME3, in something of a backlash against the ME3 backlash. Though that ends up fanning the flames. I want nothing more than for to people to at least stop making so many threads complaining about the same thing. It's hard to have an intelligent discussion about anything otherwise. It drowns out all other games discussions.

I'm not really ashamed of calling certain people entitled, but I recognise it could be counter-productive. If only they would stop using the insult "BioDrones", too.

Oh, and might want to wear a helmet. It's still an active war zone.

I'm in a hazmat suit. Hopefully that will be adequate.

Mass Effect 3 had some really difficult decisions in it. Some of them kept me thinking for like 5 minute before i chose an option.

Welcome to the front lines, soldier.

I must ask you to consult your handbook and read the section titled: let the salt rivers flow, a scorched earth response.

We're all salty about this ending, as can be expected, but we must persevere.

In the grim darkness of the post-ME3 Escapist, there is only flamewar.

(Beats Skyrim threads, though.)

To be fair, it just being carried on by a select few.

And it comes down to the age old thing of "opinions". People just cant deal with others who disagree with them -.-

We should be talking about the new silent hill now. Is it going back on track?

That's a discussion for my girl friend. She'd be talking about it all the time if I wasn't bitching about ME3 to her :p

It goes a little beyond that.

Let's say you have an opinion. And your opinion is that you really like chocolate.

I dislike chocolate, but really enjoy vanilla.

I could come to the forum and say "Hold on now, old chap. I see you like chocolate, but have you considered these flaws? And please, be patient while I express to you the merits of vanilla!" That's a reasonable divergence of opinion. It's healthy. It's good to have your opinions challenged. This kind of agreeable disagreement occurs in about 1% of forum posts.

The alternative, which occurs in about 99% of forum posts, is where I storm your thread, call you a chocolate fanboy, completely exaggerate and overstate every imaginable problem with chocolate, and then spend the next 5-10 pages of the thread arguing past you by loudly shouting down every single thing you say.

It's really just run of the mill attitude polarization, although it's kind of amusing watching it seep into something that should be emotionally neutral, like video game discussions. You expect it in the politics and religion forum, but it's really gotten to the point where you can't discuss anything without it turning into an argumentative screaming match by the 2nd page. People just love a fight.

You. Fucking. Chocolate. Fanboy.

That analogy made me giggle. :3

This forum has been bitter for a long time now. It shifted away from Gaming Discussion, to Business of Gaming Discussion. Not that I don't think the latter is important, but it's certainly not something I come here to discuss. I really think there needs to be a Gaming Business sub-forum by now.

Eh...people keep on giving that one individual an audience, so he then tries even harder. It's the worst community-wide failure to not feed the troll that I've ever seen.

I completely agree. When I see people feeding him I can't help but facepalm every time >.>

To be fair, it's not entirely the responsibility of the community to shut down trolling. There are a lot of different forms trolling can take, almost of all of it designed to elicit a reaction, so it's hardly surprising when that's exactly what happens.

This is why forums need moderation. I'm a lot more interested in knowing how he got himself unbanned than knowing why people keep getting suckered into arguing with him.

It's a conspiracy!

Actually if you take the time to talk it out with the mods you can weasel your way out of punishments. I've successfully argued a suspension before.
