RPGs are for pussies.

And what do you like to do? Shoot things with guns all day?

Depending on the game I either pick the stealthy archer type or the brute force warrior, depending in large part on to what extent the game forces you to use tank stats to stay alive. Oblivion's really good about letting the stealth characters have fun too (especially with the 100 Sneak bonus of having the first shot ignore the enemy's armor rating), but Morrowind is terrible for stealth and magic and pretty much demands you be a Nord or Orc warrior if you want to get anywhere.

Depends on the system really, in most MMO's I like to play tanks but in normal RPG's I tend to play a sneaky jerk-ass of an archer, if it's a fantasy game (more specifically D&D Scout/Fighter), otherwise I tend to lean towards simply being the toughest dude around.

If such a thing is available the hybrid class. The one that can kinda heal and kinda fight. Or kinda stealth and kinda fight.

If unavailable I tend to pick whatever makes the loudest boom (see: wizard)

I like to switch stuff up alot, and it really does depend on my mood, though usually it will be a sneaky class, either ranged or melee, but always sneaky.

When I played WoW I was a lawlidin mostly, but I had a rogue alt.

last time I played DnD I was a one-eyed druid who was always hopped up on peyote, and "in the spirit world, man." lol

oh yeah, and I love playing as a hybrid class because I always enjoy the flexibility of doing more than one thing. See my WoW days, I raided as both tank and healer, and ran around in my downtime as lolret

If it's a shooty game I'm a sniper.

If it's a magic game I'm a magic user.

Both choices tend to let me kill things quickly (^_^)

For the first play through of a good RPG I will usually be a guns blazing all power stealth machine.

i either go for the high but slow damage class, or high defense.(sometimes those 2 can be mixed, best of both worlds oh yeah.)

Fragile Speedster. Run around a lot, hit things quickly and then get out of there before you die.
Although I don't mind playing as a glass cannon either (essentially the same, albeit ranged) Or something which focuses primarily on skill.
I'm just not one for brute power.

When I first play an RPG, I usually pick a basic brute warrior type build, since those are usually the simplest. Later on, I usually switch over to a more agile/stealthy type.
Ditto.

Dumb brutes are the easiest characters to play as in most rpgs until you've worked out the more subtle mechanics in the game.

Fallout 3 is the exception to this rule, as being a sneaky small guns master makes the game much easier than focusing on the skills you would think would be more powerful like Big Guns. It's a little disconcerting how a shotgun does more damage than a missile launcher but hey... it's Bethesda lol

It doesn;t matter wht I pick, I'm going to grind until I could kill the strongest enemy in the game with the weakest type. However, I'll usually pick a balance between healers and fighters in games with multiple charactersa. I tend to stay away from the Magic users because... I don't know why.

When I RPG I usually go for a sword sheild combo so i can reactivley block all incoming attacks, whip out my sword, get one or two hits then sheild again.

Either that or get some sort of slowing spell/trap, then run around making them my arrow cushion.

A fun new way i was expermineting with in Oblivion however was a "Fister" class, with very high agility, speed, acrobatics, atheltics and hand to hand... Run around and punch them in the face, get out of the way and go back for more :D (I've also decided to use only the mythic dawn robe, and its quite fun to see a red robed guy speedily run and jump everywhere and punch people in the face)

EDIT: I've just realised that MMORPG's are included in this, so I also play any class that I can leave auto attacking one enemy and win, and take 4 or 5 at a time solo. SO basically the champion class in LOTRO.

Classy myrmidon/blademaster. Fast strikes, high agility, badass animations. Even better if they can duel-wield. Not so much a rogue, but a quick swordfighter. Think Fire Emblem ones.

After that, hybrid classes.
