Its a hypothetical not real life, everyone knows that you dont get to choose like that, and that sniping isnt what games make it out to be. Its a thread about if you could choose, what would you be? No sense in getting so worked up over it.
OT: Intelligence would be cool, but as a more active type I would think either a basic rifleman, or a humvee driver.
I'm not really wound up or anything, but that is the nature of conscription. You can't be hypothetical about it as the grim reality is, you wouldn't have a choice. If the thread was about what kind of soldier would you want to be if you enlisted then that's different.

For the record I volunteered. I was a rifleman for the TA for a while. So I know precisely how hard the training is to become a sniper is. It's easier to get into the SAS believe it or not. Trust me, most people here haven't got a clue.

Some countries like Cyprus still have the National Service, which is a mandatory two years service when you turned 18. There is opportunity to choose what you want to train in with that, but things like sniper or fighter pilot etc are out of the question.

Only real refuge in such a war is psychopathic insanity. I'm going to kill - members of my own species, to boot - anyway, why not have some fun in the process? I'd volunteer as either plane or tank gunner, of course - but if i have to be cannon fodder, so be it.

What kind of soldier? No kind. In short, i'm not dying for a country i don't even care about that much. To tell the truth i'd probably just leave at the sign of trouble. But if they somehow get me and forced me into the army, i think i'd just kill myself at the first chance i'd get.

Even those I'm so super jealous at those guys driving the Leo IIs.

I'd be somewhere between that cliche comedian guy who always provides the comic relief in tense situations and the soldier played by Charlie Sheen in the movie Platoon.

Given the choice and based on my airsoft style, I would definitely be a support gunner. If you're constantly shooting at the enemy then it makes it very hard for them to shoot back and very easy for the rest of your squad to get the drop on them. The M249 or M60 makes a very good support weapon indeed.

As for my attitude, they say that war changes a man (or, indeed, woman). I like to think, as doubtful as it is, that I would remain the eccentric comedian that tries to be a skinny Rambo that I am during my airsoft matches.

I would probably end up in intelligence. When they realize my physical aptitude is shitty but my computer skills and education in network/database/software security and cryptology could be useful that seems like the logical place to put me.

I'd be a fucking awful one. Skinny blokes with an aversion to any kind of physical activity don't make great soldiers.

K9 unit. I will train a twenty-strong pack of killer dogs armed with machinegun collars and teach them to fight my enemies while I stand stern-jawed behind them. But once you get to know me I'm a soft touch who cuddles up in a pile of dogs at night instead of a bunk because my colleagues alienated me due to my entire squad dying in a flamethrower accident.

I jest. Assuming I got to choose, I'd probably be a pilot. I like flying. If I didn't, I'd just go in a regular squad and probably be the designated marksman. I'm a pretty good shot :p

Throw them a rifle and make a man follow with a 5 round clip.. Send them rushing towards the enemy.

I'd be the guy who flys the UAV, you know away from anyone with a gun who wants to kill me.
Had to quote this, because...
You DO know that UAV stands for 'Unmanned Aerial Vehicle', right? Or do you just mean remote-control? :p

If you get drafted you go where they tell you to, even if that means banging on unexploded ordinance with a broom handle. If there was ever to be a draft, get your asses to the enlistment office QUICK! Since im premed and an OR Tech id probably be sent to an operating room to fix up all you cannon fodder :p. I plan on showing my appreciation once im done with med school and doing a few years as a Surgeon in the military. What better job experience than that.

I KNOW I will be right in the thick of it. I was trained to be "armoured mecanised infantry". So I'll load into the back of an MCV90 with my RK-95 and APILAS anti-tank misile, lots of ammo and my squad. I'm a sargeant, so I've got a buch of unwilling manchildren to order around. I was told to be more daring in combat situations, my first personal objective was to keep my squad alive and operational to the end. Which, in training. I did. Completing the given orders was possible only if we took no losses.

So my job would be to engage hostile assault troops and slow them down long enough for the armoured core to take point and counter attack. "Surprisningly" the said enemy always had material and manpower superiority, we had no air suppourt and they always attacked from the east. An interesting fact: my life expectancy in all out war would be about 30 minutes.

Anyone who has said "I'll be a sniper", no you won't. It takes much, much more skill and effort than you might think. Hell, I didn't qualify and I was the best shot in the batallion, ran 3200 metres in the cooper test and was in top condition. All designated snipers are professional soldiers, not conscripts.
