I remember there was a spyro game on ps1 that had cheats to make him change colour, but it didn't give you any advantages. First game I used an actual cheat in was Abe's Oddyssey, to get level select and skip the puzzles I couldn't solve. Got me the bad ending though :(
Well yeah, because you skipped out on saving everyone there.

I think my first cheat was in Megaman for the Gameboy. I just used the password cheat to get to Dr Willy base straight away then trying to beat Cut Man, Elec Man etc first to get the password.

I remember cheating on Age of Empires, remember the baby on a bike or the car that shoots missles?

R-Type, the 1987 arcade game from Irem. There were dip switches on the daughter board that let you modify game play, including adjusting the difficulty and an "invincible" mode.

Ahhh... those were the days...
A bunch of arcade games had switches like that for various settings like difficulty and free play mode and stuff like that. MAME even supports them all, which is pretty neat.

I have no idea what the first I used was, but something or other in the 80s. Could've been the Konami code in Contra, for all I know. It's certainly one of the most memorable ones. Speaking of things that are oddly memorable, though, bonus points to anyone who knows this one:

Tomb Raider II.

Light Flare, Walk one step forwards, walk one step back, turn around three times, jump forwards.

The embarrassment when you forget to light the flare and accidently make Lara explode.

The first Turoc on the N64. I was young, and the game scared me, but not as much when I had laser guns and could turn the enemies into ice-sculptures.

Think it's gotta be Lemmings on the Amiga 500. I seem to remember my Dad finding some Level Codes in a PC Magazine - awesome.

Sonic the hedgehog level select. Up down left right hold A & push start.

I could do the earlier levels but it all fell apart after Spring Yard zone.

Ahh man, what a good one. I completely abused that cheat - they don't make em like that anymore. Unless, of course, they do...

I used cheats for the first time in GTA III. I remember how awestruck I was when I saw my friend do that cheat he had memorized and go on a rampage with all the different weapons.

I rarely use cheats, and when I do, only for fun and not to progress. But my favorite cheat is the one that gives you a fancy motorcycle in GTA IV.
