The last book I read was American Empire: The Victorious Opposition by Harry Turtledove.

It's book seven of an eleven book series about what the North American continent would be like if the South had won the civil war and become its own country, with the countries on it hating each others guts and waging war. It only goes up to the...late 1940's, I believe.

Fantastic series...made up of a standalone book and three sub-series, each with its own complete story. But trust me...once you read How Few Remain, you're not gonna wanna put this stuff down.

Otsu-ichi's "Zoo 1," which is a collection of short stories he wrote, and oh god. All of the stories were great, and yet painful. The first story was about identical twins, where one was treated well but the other was horribly abused. Another story was about a brother and sister who had been kidnapped and put in cement room with an open gutter running down it that was just big enough for the boy to go through. There were seven rooms total, each with a girl in them, and each day one of them was murdered and chopped up, and the pieces floated out down the gutter. The next one was about a boy whose parents 'died' in a train accident, and their 'ghosts' came to take care of him, then he had to choose which parent would 'live.' Then came the story of the only survivor of a pandemic that wiped out everyone, and the android he built to bury him when he died. The last one was the story of a guy who every day received a new picture of his murdered girlfriend...decomposing.

They were all really, really good, but so depressing. I love Otsu-ich, but I had to take a break from him for a while after that. I'll try reading "Zoo 2" later.

I just started 1Q84, the new Haruki Murakami book, and so far it's really good.

I am currently reading the english version of The Children of Hurin by J.R.R Tolkien.
I picked that up a while ago but haven't gotten to it yet. How does it compare to Tolkiens other books?
It is the first book from Tolkien, so I don't really know what to tell you.

I'm halway through The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson, but it's not really catching me, and so contemporarily I've started The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan (the first book of the Wheel of Time series).
It's not literally reading, but I'm also listening to the unabridged audiobook version of The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson (the first book of the Mistborn series).

The last book was a re-read of Reapers Gale by Steven Erikson. The Malazan Book of the Fallen is simply made of awesome! I'm soon going to read Toll the Hounds as well. Hopefully that will make the wait for Dust of Dreams seem shorter...

Flashman at the Charge by George MacDonald Fraser, I'm currently reading Flashman and the Redskins, sort of going through the series.
How are you finding them? I always keep meaning to buy a Flashman book to see what they're like, but I always seem to miss my chance :(

And the last book I read was Johnny Cash's most recent autobiography, a rather excellent read for those interested in him. The book I'm reading at the moment is Stone by Adam Roberts. Not really a sci-fi fan, but I'm enjoying it :D
Rather brilliant, at the Charge is particuarly good with several laugh out loud moments.
