The whole free roaming thing in Assassin's Creed was alot of fun. For graphics I'd have to say Killzone 2, damn that was a pretty game.

Portal. I'm not going to bother explaining why when I can just refer to Yathzee's review of the Orange Box. He sums up the way I feel about this game perfectly.

MGS4 is an interesting post Zetona. That was the second PS3 game i owned and whilst i did thoroughly enjoy it i always had the lingering nitpick that the first MGS was overall a better game. As fun as 4 was the whole warzone thing sort of took away what MGS was for me. That said the last fight was frigging epic.

For me it would be Fallout 3 (PC)

Other games have done so, but that is the most recent probably.

Of course I haven't heavily gotten into Devil Survivor (DS) yet.

Persona 4 gets honorable mention, but I don't think it quite hit the level of "blew me away" when compared to Fallout 3 and the amount of time I've put into it and it's expansions cumulatively.

Fallout 3 was the game that made the biggest impact on me since GTA:SA, in terms of the size of the game world.

Okay, so people seeing my avatar may have put two and two together, and realized I've only just recently (after all this time) played system shock 2, and it has blown me away.
I can see why Bioshock did so well as it IS System Shock 2, just copypasted, and had shiny graphics and a steampunk feel rather than in the future in space.

I think that there are just game that blew you away not because their gameplay or grafics but for some other reason. They just strech inside you and touch that part of you that made say "Holy cr$%!!!" the first time you ever played a game. Games that dispide their weakneses for you are pure fun.
For me that is Gothic 2. The only game that I played 16 times in a row. And I know people who did the same as me, so it isn't just my own selfdeluded mind we are talking about.
Indigo prophesy (yeah it is more of a movie in which you press button to continue whatching) is such game too. It doesn't have great grafics, it just giving you something different.

In Order

1st was Halo. That game practically converted me from casual Nintendo gamer to Hardcore Gamer.

2nd would be Half life 1 and 2. It's practically the perfect game considering it jumped a large gap for storytelling in games, and provided incredible gameplay to match

3rd was Braid

And the latest would be the new Bionic Commando.

The story for MGS4 was just amazing, the way they tied up snake eater, sons of liberty, the first solid, and not only that, but the portable ops games in one was amazing. Not one story arc or idea was unresolved throughout Metal Gear Solid 4, so while i have a bit of a gripe about most of it being cutscene rather than gameplay. And a gripe about the gameplay being much less stealthy than the previous ones (unless you go for stealth or bandanna, which i have so far successfully made it to act 4 in). You could pretty much grab a shotgun and mow down anyone in your path. MGS4 was still bloody epic though

No game has ever really blown me away... But I can name some of the pleasant surprises: NWN2, Civ 4 and Star Wars: Republic Commando (Single player only. MP was like any other FPS, sadly)

Tf2 was suprisingly good. But i havent really found "recent" games that magnificently impressive.

Last games that "blew me away" would be Deus ex and KOTOR

I hate star wars as a movie franchise, but I must say i'm quite partial to Lucasarts games for it, and I fully agree with you. Republic commando was great. My only gripe was that it tied in with the films (not the good three, mind you) and that at times, the difficulty curve was crazy.
(ie. running out of bullets with all my guns when there's a massive force of drones near me right as i'm trying to deactivate a forcefield.

Well, Sly 2: Band of Thieves seriously impressed me since I paid £2 for it as part of a package, so I didn't expect much at all.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones also impressed me, what with the added features that, for me, made it shine above the other 2 GBA Fire Emblem games.

However, the last game to have really blown me away would have to have been Assassin's Creed, as it was the first game I played on both the XBox 360 and the PS3, and it just really impressed me.

Oddly enough I'd have to say John Woo's Stranglehold. Never thought it would be as much fun as it was.

Diving sideways in slow motion, firing two handguns into a crowd of angry asian gangsters never felt so right.
