Due to extreme heat on the gaming industry for violence and a certain level of rather careless parenting in southwest North America, ive become tempted to ask the community at what age and what game/platform thier first 18+ rated game is and just how the violence was in said game as far as blood, gore, and real world references go. Note that games must have been rated at least 18+ to count. If theyre unrated for one reason or another it doesnt count.

So not wanting to occupy too much time, me first:

Conflict: Desert Storm 2
PS2
Age at time: 12
The game was a standard 'United States special forces against terrorism' affair, so yes it was alot of gunfighting. Blood effects were minimum only appearing in a torture cutscene and a brief red mist when you successfully headshot a terrorist. (Side Note: the game didnt mention factions specifically but the training mission had the drill sarge mention Saddam)

EDIT: Seeing as some people are unsure just put up the earliest one you can remember.
EDIT 2: Decided to drop explaining for the more well known games and series such as GTA and anything that made it onto the charts with zombies in it.

EDIT 3: Kind of embarrased to admit this but i got it wrong.
Turns out my REAL first 18+ was:
Command and Conquer: Red Alert
PS1 (port)
Age at Time: 5
Actually rated 'For ages 18 and above' by the long dead ELSPA
Pretty unsurprising considering the heavy war references really.
Intresting Side Note!: Its expansions (under the name 'Retaliation') got ported to PS1 but was only rated 15+ despite it being the same only more so.

EDIT 4: Clearing up another confusion issue; YES, Mortal Kombat qualifies.
EDIT 5: Rule Change; you can now post first 18+ played but not actually owned.
EDIT AGAIN: Due to some confusion with rating systems just run with whatever american system was there at the time. And if you dont know, Wiki it.

Half-Life 2, when I was 13; not all that objectionable, and it's a well-told story with solid gameplay.

Perfect Dark I believe I maybe mistaken there. Age: 11 0r 12.

If not that than the first Halo. Not really all that bad beside that one part when you walk into a walkway literally painted in alien blood. And I was around 13 at the time.

The original GTA, I must've been about twelve I guess, maybe younger. I didn't then and still don't understand why everyone thought it was so bad, the graphics depicted cartoon violence at worst and the odd poor quality digital scream at best.

Grand Theft Auto, when I was about 12. Oddly enough my parents bought it for me, deciding that I was intelligent enough to not take the game seriously enough to swear, deal drugs and kill people. Wouldn't you know it? They were right too. Was a fun game to mess around in but way too ahrd to play otherwise. Since 3 the series has been far better.

I had Wolfenstein: 3-D when it came out, but that was before such rating systems existed. I think Wolf3D was rated "Profound Carnage," but later rated M when it was released for GBA.

Quake 2, when I was like five or six.
My mom even got in on it.

Nothing like blowing up a Teletubby.

Fallout. Got it for my 16th birthday. I think that was the first, anyway...

"This isn't too bad, it's just some underground place."
"What, this big, open, dead wasteland meant to scare me or something?"
"WHOA, THAT GUY'S HEAD JUST FLEW OFF!"

I was hooked at step 3.

Half Life 2.

I was... 12 at the time. Absolutely loved it, even then. It blew my mind that an fps could not only have a plot, but a fantastic one at that.

Perfect Dark. My cousin rented it with me before GTA III came out and my mom turned anti-violent video game. Then I bought it. I told my mom I don't get why it is rated M because it has aliens and she let me get it.

And yeah. GTA III came out and I wasn't allowed to rent or buy another M rated game till I was like... 16. It was always no questions. I thought it was stupid at the time, but I would probably do the same for my kids.
