Boogie Pop Phantom

had some REALLY mature content, not just LOL TIT'S EVERYWHERE (Don't even think there were many nudity scenes) but the subject matter was interesting and the story was well told.

you should look up the engdub on youtube, good stuff.

Probably Cowboy Bebop. Considering I saw Yu Yu Hakusho censored way before I saw it uncensored.
Gantz still holds the spot for best adult manga in my book though.

I can't remember if it was FLCL or Elfen Lied I saw first, but it was definitely one of those two.
FLCL is by far the greatest anime ever made. but i thought elfen lied sucked, hard.
Agreed, though I didn't think Elfen Lied sucked, but it wasn't great.
Really who ever wrote FLCL was on pot, or crack, or something like that. Aside from the initial WTF factor it was good overall. another favorite is Gurren Lagann
FLCL was amazing yet at the same time what makes it even better is when your friends ask you what its about you can't tell them anything.
But yes Elfen Leid blew hard, couldn't get my self past the first 3 episodes.
Go watch gantz, then read the manga when the anime does that stupid change the ending thing they all like to do.
Nudity, gore, boners and giant naked woman aliens made up of many normal sized naked women. It just gets better and better.

Death Note was First. Ghost In The SHell was second. Higurashi No Nokku Koro Ni was third. Umeniko Koro Ni was fourth, than SPice and Wolf was fifth.

Alright so just so you guys know don't say DBZ (unless you saw it uncensored), Pokemon, and any other anime that was shown on a kids channel, because those were edited and kid friendly. This is about your first time watching an anime that was uncensored and mature. I think my first anime was Elfen lied when I first saw it when I was 12, the gore and nudity didn't bother me, and IMO had a great story.
Elfen Lied was my first too. To be honest, aside from Pokemon and Dragonball Z when I was a kid, the only anime I've seen (both very recently) have been Elfen Lied and Hellsing.

I saw all of the Hellsing anime, but now I'm watching the OVAs too. Reluctant to watch past Episode 4 though since I don't really enjoy subbing (I always prefer dubs, even bad dubs) and the company responsible for the English translations went bust after they did episode 4 of Hellsing Ultimate. So I'm stuck for now, three episodes to go (until the next one is released in Japan, obviously) and all in subtitles unless I want to wait for at least a few months, probably longer...

Tenchi Muyo had to be my remembered first but I know in my heart I've seen one before that. It took place in L.A and the police had mecha and most of them were women. I remember rape and gore being prevalent.

You came late to the whole "mature anime" thing right?

Akira, I think I was in 3rd-4th grade or something when I saw it.
Yay! Akira-brothers!
Akira popped my cherry to when I was about 11.

The way Kaori died really messed me up when I first saw it, though.

EDIT: Wait a tick, I already posted in this thread a while ago. My memory ain't what it used to be.
Re: SPOILER: Me too! Freaked me out a little. I was like, "You can DO THAT in animation?"

Edit: Alright by "mature" I mean an anime that has a great plot, characters, and makes you feel like your watching something that makes you think.
Anime designed for kids can definitely have a great plot, great character, and make you think.

Because of this I am going to answer your question by defining mature as something that isn't designed for kids or is too violent/complex/etc for kids to understand.

Full Metal Alchemist (which in some cases could be considered "for kids") was probably my first "mature" anime.

Then followed Cowboy Bebop, Furi Kuri, and Samurai Champloo.
