Ghost in the shell, at the time I was flicking through channels and noticed a cartoon person having his/her head explode. From that day I went and watched the entire series. I was with a freind it was like. "Dude this is the most violent cartoon I've ever seen, and I've watched spongebob."

Gundam Wing might be it, but I was too young to understand a lot of it at the time. That, or just because I didn't actually have Cartoon Network to watch it regularly. It actually was uncensored for a run or two.

Definitely this. Been many, many years since I've seen it, now, but it's quite possibly the first anime I ever saw, when I think about it.
Pretty intense for a 12 year-old, IMO.

Wait, Escaflowne was mature? I watched the DUB when I was 5!

Elfen Lied would be the very first one I'd consider to be my first real "mature" one.

Outlaw Star when I was eleven would be the first ''mature'' anime I watched. Forget what episode it was though, but I always remembered the name. Recently enough, I watched the entire series through. Great series too. Loved it!

I don't think it counts, but I'm going to say Air Gear. From what I remember of it, it had a lot of nudity and cursing. Blood, I don't remember (haven't seen it in a long time unfortunately).
