Seriously. It is the only piece of fiction that has ever made me shed a tear. And damn, I was fighting it all the way too.

Welcome to the NHK is very good. As is Angel beats. Gurren Lagann is very enjoyable, though I haven't finished it yet. FLCL is the brilliants, and it's only 7 episodes or something. Lucky star and K-ON should definitely be watched. The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is also good.
Code geass and Death note also make the list.

There are of course plenty more.

You really gotta watch durarara. The first dvd vol was like just released, and you can only buy it online and only from the bandai store, but all the episodes are on crunchyroll so you could watch it there.

Well lots of people are putting out personal favourites and you could get an endless list of that, but for the biggest 'major series' you missed the top 3 unanimous choices would probably be Death Note, The Melachonly of Haruhimi Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Runner up would be either Clannad: After Story or Code Geass, depending on your preference (I tried Clannad but it retained too much of a 'dating sim' vibe for me).

There are two Melancholy series?

I've only ever heard of Haruhi.

Oops how did that happen, let me go edit it. Though they did release a second season fairly recently... great to see but obviously dissapointing for a very obvious reason. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is it's own series... though the The Melachonly of Haruhimi Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann would be nuts

Studio Bones always seems to make a great series, Fullmetal Alchemist Star Driver, Soul Eater. (I just realized all their shows are basically "Noun-Verber" )
Right now I'm on a quest to watch everything that Gainax has ever made. but I think I'll avoid the product tie-in they made with subaru.

Bones is a pretty constant studio.
I loved the Movie Sword of the Stranger they did recently.

And yea, iv heard that the Magical Subaru girl show is extremely generic shit.

Another studio id recommend is Tatsunoko Productions.
Tekkaman Blade, Karas, Casshern, Gatchaman.

They have a legacy of Genre defining anime.

when watching Gurren Lagann, watch to only ep 15 because the anime turns to total shit then, actually it goes downhill after ep 7. Its good but wasted potential, they could have done way better with it. Other than that I would recommend one piece and fairy tail.
