It went a lot like this:

World History - Chapter One: Beginning of the Earth to WWII.
World History - Chapter Two onward (twelve chapters per unit, three units,): America.

American History: America.

I hate our school system. I dumped most of the knowledge because it was, frankly, utter shit. If it wasn't "America is great" it was "America WAS AND STILL IS great."
I don't need that shit.
Agreed, I am glad others share my opinion of the propaganda passed off as fact in U.S. schools.

Canadian History is a great big embuggerance.
Trapped half way between being owned by a modern day heartless mega corporation and a very tentative British/French occupation, mix that in with fighting with the Natives, add a pinch of "The french are second class citizens, and therefore aren't allowed to do anything in Lower Canada (Called that despite being located on the upper portion of earlier maps). After much in fighting, 1812 aside, politely asking the Crown "Oh, you don't mind if we move out on our own do you?" Then for some questionable reason, jumping almost immediately anytime England needed help moving furniture (ie, their touch of involvement with wars and etc) and then electing morons into the house of commons, and to quote Robin Williams "The House of Commons, like congress with a 4 drink minimum."

Thats what I learned in history

I've noticed that in middle and high-school, I was programmed with a lot of canned, cookie-cutter American history designed to instill the values and inspire the spirit of the founding fathers, and for the most part I still believe in that stuff. I love the idea of the independent American spirit and I think our founding fathers were on the right track.

That's why I'm often so very PISSED OFF at the real world, which has shown me that the values America was supposedly founded on are all but dead. Makes me wonder if those values were a lie, or if they've just been spectacularly corrupted over the course of the last 233 years...

I don't think we'll ever know.
That's what makes me wonder... how could we stray that far from the path in only two centuries? The industrial revolution really was incredible, but is cultural hegemony really a powerful enough force to make us all say "fuck it, we'd rather have money!"??? Because in my mind, most of the problems in America stem from the replacing of core values with dollar signs.

Obama now says he wants to make our economy less based on consumerism... it's a day I've been dreaming of for some time now, but I still think he's just DREAMING...

Up until recently, I was with you... I was ready to leave this misguided place, but it's starting to get REALLY EXCITING around here and I guess I want to stick around just to see how things pan out - even knowing that the going is gonna get rough.

Cus you're being lied to all the time, right? I know how that feels. I'm graduating soon with a major in telecommunications and brother, the degree to which we get manipulated is just sick. Can't blame ya for tuning out, but it's just not in my nature.

Not off topic at all - Dr Gonzo and Raoul Duke were on a quest to find the heart of the American Dream! :D
Thanks for the hat-tip; in return I gotta recommend the original book, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson, and his work The Gonzo Papers Vol. 1: The Great Shark Hunt. He knew more about America than one man should!

We spent a lot of time on slavery when I still took history. Wayyyy too much time. Basically we learned everything about America from a pure propaganda point of view. If only people were smart enough to break through the bullshit. Hell, I wasn't even taught that the French helped out in the American Revolution. Learned that from movies. Terrible.
The French never helped with anything. Because they're french.

Hey, what do you call 170,000 People with their hands up?
One hell of a party!
/off topic

Anyway, I've been taught the AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! version of history, and quite a bit about how much AMERICA! kicks ass. No, really; I have an ancient assignment in front of me about the founding fathers, and I'll quote myself, "Our Founding Fathers were very good. They killed many british, and did other cool things."

I got full credit on it. WOOOOOO!

I remember learning about the Tudors and WW1 in primary, and the suffragettes and equal rites movement later on. "I'm from Europe where the history comes from"

Same old same old... American Revolution as the greatest moment in history, War of 1812 as the the greatest moment in history, Civil War as the worst moment in history, WW1 and WW2 as America's greatest moments in history... etc. etc.

My school teachers were a bit on the fanatical side when came to things like this.

Oyh!

The only period that really matters in the history of my country (the Netherlands) is called: "The Golden Age" (17th century. Why do we call it "The Golden Age"? Well.. that's because this is the only period in wich we did really achieve something. We got ourselfs some colonies. Sold New York to (i think it was)England for just one piece of gold. We did kick ass with our ships tough.

And last but not least we shipped like almost all the Africans to America.

Something we are really proud of ofcourse.. We did get pretty rich by doing that. Not that it helped us with anything. We got overrun by almost every country in Europe except for Belgium. That's what we learn about our country.

I love The Netherlands <3

All we were taught about Irish history was that we were cool and then the British conquered us. (There was no mention of how we actually sold out to the Brits but how or never) We were "oppressed" until Parnell decided to push for home rule. But that didn't work because of scandal. Then there was the 1916 rising. Which failed epicly. A few years later there was guerrilla warfare against the Brits. Which, resulted in a treaty. "Woohoo 26 out of 32 counties are ours!" came the cry of victory. Which was short lived because a lot of people got pissy about the fact we didn't get the 32 outright, or didn't get that the 26 county treaty was a stepping stone towards that. And so the Irish Civil War began. Micheal Collins got shot along with so many others and we put getting Northern Ireland under our control out of reach. Forever.
