Yeah, most of the hype came from the Duke Nukem name, but it still hyped up the game. I'll admit, I never played the original games, but from what I've heard the gameplay was based on over-the-top fun. And you'd expect a new game in a franchise like that to also be all about over-the-top fun.
Add in the fact that so many people seemed to think that becasue it was in development for so long it would obviously be awesome and you're left with a lot of people very disappointed.
I don't know but here is my list of candidates (If they're as good as they seem so far):
Portal 2
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Batman: Arkham City
Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
There are some other games out there (like Saints Row: the Third, and Sword of the Stars) that could turn out to be even better than they look, or all of the above games turn out to be nowhere near as good as they look(Highly unlikely either way).
It doesn't look like Guild Wars 2 will come out this year. But regardless of when it comes out, it think it will beat the pants out of all the competition that year.

Probably Skyrim or Uncharted 3. But I hope Last Guardian could win (if it even comes out this year). For me personally right now its Dead Space 2, I've played most of the games that come out so far (on consoles) and Dead Space just sticks out.
If it were down to me, i would give every award to portal 2... well, GOTY anyway.

If it does come down to those two, then i will have to wait and play them both before giving any sort of opinion, but i predict that i will probably enjoy skyrim more.

There's really no clear winner. Uncharted 3 looks like it's going to have a really good shot, but I think LA Noire is the best we've seen so far, and it's one of those defining video games that will be talked about for a long time (no doubt in my mind about this, everything is just done so well). Skyrim also has a really good chance at it.
I'd say either Portal 2, The Witcher 2, Mass Effect 3 (although since this has now been pushed back i doubt it, more than likely next year for them now), Skyrim or Saints Row 3 depending on if any of those which aren't out yet are pushed back like ME3, Personally though i'd say it's down to how well Skyrim comes out, otherwise it's The Witcher for me.
Best multiplayer will probably be Battlefield 3 it's looking pretty good so far. Skyrim will probably get it, I haven't played it so I can't decide for that yet. I have played though The Witcher 2 and am very impressed so far it's GOTY just have to see what '11 will bring.
I don't really know, 2011 is only half way over (and literally if you think about it. This is the exact day that marks halfway)
I can tell you that L.A. Noire has a shot, even though I don't think it deserves it. Investigations were just done poorly and it never really gave you a sense of badassness that really would have been easy to pull off.
I'm gonna take this moment to complain about the game.
It was almost too realistic. Really, you were just an investigator and the cases didn't mean much. You were basically just solving murders.
They needed to add more Hollywood to it (no pun intended). You're character is obsessed with the cases he does. The serial killer starts to target you and your family... I'm having trouble explaining it at the moment. It needed to be more suspenseful and menacing.
Not to mention that (spoilers for the Homicide desk)
My GOTY. I think it's gonna be Skyrim.
No Call of Duty has won game of the year for the past 4 years, this won't change a thing.
Oh, and I'm a fan of the series. That doesn't make me an idiot. I enjoy the games, why should I force myself not too?

a good 5 hour segment of the game capturing and interrogating people who very obviously committed the crime and had absolutely no credible alibi's was all done for nil, seeing how it was all by one serial killer

My personal one would almost certainly be Portal 2, but the amount of hype surrounding Skyrim (which, I'll admit, is shaping up to be pretty awesome) means it'll probably take the GOTY title for most people.
Mass Effect 2 came out last year, not this year. and Mass Effect 3 is coming out next year.Flac00 said:
imo, Battlefield is already the obvious choice for Best Shooter... but if were talking about the Spike VGAs, then they will probably choose Modern Warfare 3, since it will be more popular.
GOTY will probably be between Portal 2, LA Noire, Skyrim, and RAGE. Deus Ex could also be a contender. its hard at this point.
