If I may digress slightly, I personally would like to know how BioWare plans to explain us being able to change our appearence/class in the third game. I can only see either:
- Another accident/near-death/revival circumstance
- Bioware FORCING you to buy ME1/ME2 (highly unlikely) - no new game feature
or, possibly:
- Shepard has to have surgery to make sure his/her implants don't fall out or something.

Anyone got any ideas?

P.S. This doesn't mean I'm not psyched for ME3, Christmas 2011 can't come quickly enough!
Or simply you pick your ME2 save if you have it, or just make yourself a new Shep if you don't. If you want to carry over a save then it doesn't let you change your appearance.

You just gave me a great idea! In between ME 2 and 3 some organization(we'll say the Alliance for simplicity) has studied and adopted Collector technology though a number of encounters, not just from the collector base(which could have been destroyed). While being upgraded with said tech you get to change your class/appearance. Yeah I know it's not that original/thought out, but come on I'm not a Bioware writer.

That was incredibly vague, but I do agree that Mordin will not be returning and Thane's disease will catch up with him.

Simply put, you return: Mission Accomplished. Deal with the fallout of your operations with Cerberus; remaining team separates, you get new mission.

They should keep Tali in no matter what. Like, if you start ME3 with Tali dead it should just say "Sorry, you failed ME2. Try again and don't get Tali killed this time".

So with the new Mass effect 3 coming out you have to wonder how Bioware will suddenly cause all the characters from the last game to suddenly disappear. So what do you thnk?
I'm not sure but I know one thing.
The plot of the third game will have absolutely nothing to do with the first or second game and it will make less and less sense until the end where the terminators come and take over the planet Earth.

Your ship will be attacked by a new enemy known only as "The Gatherers". You, and your allies, will die, but you will be brought back to life by the Blue Suns. They're leader, "The Secretive Man" will then tell you he brought you back to stop the Reapers and The Gatherers. And when you mention how all the previous Blue Suns you've fought were all just hapless mooks doing bad things, he'll just say they were rouge elements.
Ah, yes. These so called "Gatherers" that Shepard is obsessed with...

Bioware is good at making ridiculous amounts of content as far as characters go. Every possible combination of things from the first two games will be included. Like the rachni queen sending you the messenger if you chose that branch of quest in the first game. Every combo of content will be included, the only characters that will "disappear" are the ones that died, horrible random chance deaths. If you kept everybody alive, you probably lose some to the typical "I'm gonna gather your army, see ya", but they have to keep others... they might even make it a choice in itself, and get you to pick who leaves your side to gather the forces. Choosing the cool characters that you've really liked, might end up making the endgame more difficult, because they may have gathered the coolest of the available dudes... My inner strategy and quest chain nerd is suddenly hopeful.

I predict the segregation between story and gameplay will be so complete that progress will require getting high scores in classic arcade games such as moon patrol and elevator action. After every hundred thousand or so points scored you are treated to a cutscene where you have the choice to press a button, or not, but the outcome will be exactly the same whether or not you do it.

The universe will continue to be bland and lifeless with a couple of exceptions which are used for bluntly showing off the game engine. The "decisions" you made in previous games will have the effect of changing one line of dialog from a minor character who is in a corner.

You will get a newer, faster, shinier yet equally boring ship which will again only be shown in use during cutscenes because the developers are too lazy to make a space combat engine.

98% of the development budget will be spent on non-interactive cutscenes, marketing, and martin sheen.

Expect the story to be littered with commercials for the DLC.

I always pictured it as a gradual increase in transparency until he has completely faded into a gray wall.
Or he would just have taken a hike for some risky search involving some kind of prize. Yes, I went there.

OT: I'd be happy if the crew just went away due to implications mentioned in above posts. Markus/Catherine/Hjalmar Shepard, Blasto "The first Hanar Spectre" and Soap McTavish XII is perfectly enough to counter a puny Reaper invasion.

Why care? My emotional involvement with Mass Effect ended with the second game. I?ll buy the third, get what enjoyment out of it I can, and then put it away and forget about it just like I did with the second game, except with the second game I didn't do the forgetting about it thing because all the rage made that impossible.

Easy, I'm thinking at least 1 year passes between the second and third game and so they could just say that they left for some time to do their own things ( something like " Hey Sheppard, I'm gonna go fishing for some time since there's not much to do atm, give me a call when the whole robot invasion begins and come pick me up so we can kick some metal ass" :p )and you'll probably have to gather them all again ( the ones that survived ) plus maybe some new ones, simple, easy and fits perfectly with the story.

I don't see why the burden has to be placed on the third game. why not have everyone you saved still there and still important. No save game import, miranda and jacob were the only survivors I hope you like hearing stories about the priiize noob. Sole survivor? well if your going to go out of your way to be a dick then no squad mates for you. If bioware is prepared to melt your crew as punishment for dicking around in a situation normally covered by gameplay/story segregation then I'm sure they are prepared to punish you for being an unmotivated jerk or a cheapskate. or just give you some stock alliance solders with less personality than mr token black character.

Who in their right mind would make a two disc epic about building a team only to kill them all off before the grand finale? Hannibal didn't have to re recruit the A team every episode why would we?

All they have to do is incapacitate Shepard for long enough to have everyone get bored and Leave. I have the feeling that it might be explained away as just people going their separate ways to address there own issues through. Such as one will no longer be bound to Shepard by oath and leave, one was dyeing in the last game, one might go do more medical research, one will probably go to his homeworld or find a Krogen posse in space, etc. I think the characters can easily leave just b having other issues to address and not being able to stick around forever.

Why would they disappear?
Because everyone will be able to recover their old games from ME2, and depending on how you played, there's about a million different combinations of characters left alive or dead at the end of the game. This causes obvious problems, problems that are at least partially solved by a giant reset button, similar to the destruction of the Normandy at the BEGINNING, NOT A SPOILER of Mass Effect 2.

And of course, we need an excuse for Shepard to get a new squad. Because we like new squads.
