"There is nothing new under the sun."
"Create the story you would want to read."
- These two together counter any insecurities I feel when working on creative efforts.

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind."
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
- These answer the important "how do I live my life?" issues.

"Nobody makes a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little." - Edmund Burke

If you live through the tides of darkness then you will be bathed in rays of joy.

And one more.

If you think school sucks wait until you go to work.

"all debts are to be paid in full"
"pray for success, prepare for failure"
"if you decide to give it your all, youve allready won."
"im a man of my word, i keep my promises"
-all 4 by me

then theres my code of honor (too long to post here)

and finnaly, there is something my grandpa told me.

Me and my grandpa where out in the fields and we where talking and I mentioned how some people are selfish. He asked me how I would like to be when I grew up (at the time, I was 8) and I told him I would also have to grow up to be selfish so that Im never disappointed. He stopped and turned to me. ?Jonny?? he took the shovel and drew a small circle in the soil. ?Some people draw a circle and take care of only the people inside it, themselves. But a few good people draw large circles and take care of only there family and friends.? (At which point he drew a large circle around me and stepped in it to indicate that?s what he chose to do.) But there are even fewer greater people that draw ever bigger circles and bring in even more people, some people they don?t even know?? (A larger circle, this one was twice the size of his. When he is finished, he approaches me.) ?But what I want you to do is to be even greater?? (Takes my hands and makes me draw a tight circle around only myself.) ?I want you to always promise to take care of everyone who is not in your circle.?

Everything can be understood. There is nothing in nature that simply happens by itself, everything is an effect of some cause, you simply need to look hard enough. Anyone who tells you that it's okay not knowing is not worth your time.

Not really "words to live by", more a general philosophy.

If you're looking for something a little more poetic, here's something, paraphrased. I don't remember the source, but I still remember the general idea after all this time so it must mean something.

"Anyone who is afraid of the dark is clearly oblivious to what occurs in the light".

Ah, Nietzsche. I've never put too much stock in philosophers, but old Nietzsche is a favorite indeed.

"I am not altogether on anybody's side, because nobody is altogether on my side, if you understand me. . . .And there are some things, of course, whose side I'm altogether not on; I am against them altogether." - J. R. R. Tolkien

"When you get to my age, and I'm 66 now, you realize that the world is a madhouse and that most people are operating in fantasy anyway. So once you realise that, it doesn't bother you much." - John Cleese

"I think it's really tragic when people get serious about stuff. It's such an absurdity to take anything really seriously. . .I make an honest attempt not to take anything seriously: I worked that attitude out about the time I was eighteen, I mean, what does it all mean when you get right down to it, what's the story here? Being alive is so weird." - Frank Zappa

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth a war, is much worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice; a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice, ? is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other." - John Stuart Mill

"Some who have read the book, or at any rate have reviewed it, have found it boring, absurd, or contemptible; and I have no cause to complain, since I have similar opinions of their works, or of the kinds of writing they obviously prefer." - J. R. R. Tolkien

Not to be a total whore for another site I frequent, but if you like punchy one-liners with a great amount of thought and a bit of a dark tone try Wickedjester.com

"Never make things more complicated than they need to be." I tend to find that it does make most aspects way easier to deal with.
