Id aim at the ground and propel myself into the air with a shotgun blast to escape.

Result of this: a few shotgun pellets on your feet and a quite painful death.

1) shooting yourself in the foot doesnt necesarily kill you.

2) You clearly never played Quake or Team Fortress

While it's true that I haven't played Quake I do play TF2 (Rocket-Jump, Sticky-Jump and FaN-Jump). When I said that you would suffer a painful death I meant that because you would be eaten by the zombies (which is quite painful) while having some bad lesions on your feet (painful).

Also, you clearly haven't watched the Doomsday Arcade episode where Shanks tries to rocketjump resulting in his lack-of-legs

I'd jump in the dumpster and stand in the middle, as close to the wall as possible, then I'd use the shotgun to club every zombie that reached for me, since I am in the dumpster I would have a solid fence at least waist high all around me, plus my back would be free, that should make it possible to club 100 zombies, they'd come at me even slower once I have enough zombie corpses around me.
