Just hypothetically:

You are a sucessful Game Creator and visionary of wonderous new games (Think Will Wright) and your last game was a success.
You have a huge, able staff and millions of dollars to spend on your next blockbuster game.
What do you make?
What would it be about?
Platforms?
Storyline?
Radical New gameplay system?
Space Goats?

What would you make?

I'd make a 7th gen version of Homeworld 2: a 3D space real-Time strategy where you go through the universe (notice it's not galaxy) and meet, trade with or engage sentinet beings or other cultures.
There'd also be the ability to go on away missions to surfaces of some planets to seek new life, discover new materials or artifacts.
There'd also be Multiplayer for RTS deathmatches. Or maybe galactic hide-and-go-seek. That'd be fun.

What do you think?

And Again, what would you make?

With those kind of money, id would make a multiengine-functional, very deep, version of Gary's mod.

It would have many more features, functions, and possibilities then the original. A fantastic tool to create your own games, movies, cartoons, contraptions, and much more...

If given the correct tools, the most fun you can have with a game, is what you make yourself.

Absolutely. Instead of standing by all the things I claim that a great game should have, such as a compelling story and a great moral lesson to be learned; I'd simply create a giant sandbox game. It is a Hell of a lot more fun (and satisfying) to see people create their own stories using your software, rather than having to play through a linear path and risk not enjoying themselves.

I would make an absurdly complicated Text-based adventure game, complete with about 1000 different endings, full voice acting, sophisticated AI, ultra-advanced command recognition, endless character customization, inspired writing and an emotionally moving story, and absolutely NO pictures.

YOu just made my decision very easy: I'd find out how to contact you and help you in any way that I can.

A challenging, well balanced 2-D beat-em-up with multiple characters, branching paths (both through the levels and the story), and several special moves for each character. As well as RPG elements (ie; leveling up, finding/buying/selling items, character customization), except no random chance shit.

-The items you'd find in the game would depend on the character you're playing, so no giant axes for mages. The weapons would all be balanced (ie, a hammer you find may be more powerful than the sword you're using, but it would have a shorter reach), so no Boot of Kickass or Pwnage Cannon. (unless you beat the uber hard secret final boss on the hardest difficulty)

- Instead of mashing buttons to break free when grabbed by an enemy/trap, A QTE would appear above your character.

- Leveling up wouldn't be done by grinding, but finishing stages. The longer/harder the stage, the more levels gained.

- Characters' stats and special moves would be upgraded like weapons in RE4, but each stat would require more points to max out. Characters wouldn't be able to max out everything at the end, making one player's character different from another player's character, despite both having the same character.

- Alternate endings, both based on the choices you make and how well you do.

- Unlockable Feature: being able to play through story mode as every character in the game, from annoying jumping guy to the final boss, and being able to upgrade them and get weapons for them.

- Survival Mode

- Boss Attack Mode

- Counter-operative mode (ala Perfect Dark): One team controls the heroes, the others play as the bad guys as they appear on screen and try to stop them.

- Optional Challenge Missions outside of the story: (ie, defeat Boss X and 30 goons within Y minutes, play as final boss and defeat all of the heroes, etc.)

I'd make the first FPS game ever with a story that doesn't read like it's come out of some crap b-movie.

A competitive online talk show for xbox live that comes with a breathalyzer accessory.

To access most games, you have to "score" high enough on the breathalyzer to filter the men from the boys, before letting you competitivly talk against others on a series of topics, of which the winner is the one who says the most intelligent words, with penalties for going offtopic or rude. And give it an E rating to make it more popular.

Should'nt be too hard, and would make millions, especially for the sponsors.

well, if i had all the resources you describe, the first thing i would do is purchase the company Bethesda, maker of the elder scrolls series. then, i would remake elder scrolls: 3 morrowind.

now i know a lot of people, especially yahtzee, don't really like remakes. but to this day, that is the best game i have ever played. i would update it with graphics on par with oblivion, and totally revamp the combat system; make it even more in depth than oblivion's.

one thing that oblivion did that i think was a waste of time, was giviing every character in the game voiced dialogue. this sounds cool, but it made for much less content in the game than morrowind had, because so much time was spent on voice acting. i would keep my morrowind remake with the text of the original, with only voice acted parts with main characters or important story arcs.

plus of course you gotta add some new content as well, but the main thing will be the addition of multiplayer, not in the mmo sense, where you can have hundreds of players on a server, on this there will be maybe 20 max. there will be a quest competition sort of thing, where the players will compete against one another for quests, and once the quest is done by one player, it cannot be done by the other players. now of course, there will have to be a team constantly developing new quests and content, but i will make the multiplayer quest competition, and a single player mode completely seperate.

I've had the idea in my head for a while now, trying to flesh it out and see what it turns into.

-Mission based combat with RPG (Developing skills and stats of each character) and fighting game elements (Combos and such)

-A wide cast of characters to assist the player in the battle, either controlled by a highly customizable AI, or other people, and who's interaction with the player will alter the storyline

-A wide variety of Attacks and skills, easily able to be chained onto each other so long as you have "Combo points" (Some thing like Magic points, that is spent whenever a character attacks, and refills quickly when a character is not attacking)

-Despite there being a "Main" character, the Player can use any character at their disposal (Though the main Character has to be around for every mission)

-Developing a character's stats is done through stat points given to ever character in the Party (Even the ones not used) earned by completing the level, and how well the team did during the stage. Skills can be bought by earning EXP by whacking baddies during the stage, and buying the skills afterwards.

-Four stats. One for increasing the damage one deals PERIOD, One for decreasing the damage taken PERIOD, One for increasing attack speed PERIOD, and one for increasing "Combo points... PERIOD.

-The only "set in stone" controls are the movement and camera. Every other attack can be hotkeyed to any button/key the player likes.

-Main characters starting statistics and appearences can be customized

-Lots of choices and different endings, based on the aforementioned interaction with characters (For instance, Making a character happy, or taking them into battles alot makes them more loyal to you and more likely to stick with you for certain missions, while treating characters poorly, or leaving characters out makes them more likely to leave you(just the first idea coming to mind, the different endings wouldn't be just "I'm gonna date him/her"))

Thats all I can remember for now...

Basically, It's the demented bastard child of "Tales of Symphonia" and "Gauntlet"

I would go for some kind of MMORPG for the Elder Scrolls

full on PvP
with all the guilds and such included in the game. Then you could really get assassenated by the Morag tong or the Dark Brotherhood.

Nice freaking job. How imaginative.
I made this to indicate there is still originallity in the world.
I will now correct my statement:
On the Escapist, most people are creative.

I would make a game called "The Fly"

It would be a real fly-on-the-wall game where your role is to gather as much intel on the human race as possible while trying to avoid being swat to death by an angry Italian gentleman. "I getta you! You...stupido fly!"

Then...the flies will take over the world!

Me and my older brother talk about stuff like this all the time.

He wants to make a game where you're a cleaning robot in a game set in the future-as-predicted-by-people-in-the-50s where you either choose to take over the world with all the other robots, or help the humans against the robots.

We talked about a training level where your manufacturers put you in a cardboard representation of a house and get to play around. Depending on your choices in the simulation, is where you end up.

For example, Cardboard Dad Master asks you to fetch the remote. Do you:
-A: Grab the remote and hand it to him?
-B: Grab the remote and place it in your chest-mounted garbage disintegration unit?
-C: Grab the remote and bludgeon him to death with it?

Another example is that you overhear Cardboard Son Master wishing that Cardboard Daughter Master would 'just die'. Do you:
-A: Treat it as an order and kill Cardboard Daughter Master?
-B: Inform Cardboard Daughter Master of Cardboard Son Master's wish?
-C: Ignore the request?

If you are really 'chummy-chummy' with the Cardboard Family Masters, your creator will take you on personally, and you'll be on the human side of the war. If you flip out and kill them, you'll be sent to the junkyard and fight alongside the other robots.

On a different project, we were talking about what it would be like if shooting games had talking guns. Not talking like 'Out of Ammo', but more like HK-47 talking. Depending on the gun, they'd praise you for marksmanship and ridicule you for low accuracy.

We decided that the Rocket Launcher would be the token black guy/gun thing, the sniper rifle would be a pompous Brit, and that at least one of the guns would have HK-47's bloodlust with it.

I'd get a decent story and pick an engine to tell the story...

Too many games are: I want an FPS. Right a story.... Ummm... Terrorists? Nuclear bomb stolen? YEAH! That'll do!

I think i'd just mod Oblivion or STALKER and make them what they should have been. With a multi million dollar budget i'd hire voice actors by the truck load...

I got two idea's. I would create an action RPG set in the future complete with space travel but the games culture would be that of feudal japans with upgraded weaponry of course. IT would mainly be reaction and combo based slash em up with the occasional gun making a cameo. Secondly I would create a game where through a mysterious turn of events, you accidentally kill the grim reaper just as he is about to kill you. With the world needing a new life taker you take on the role of death going around collecting the lives of evil do'ers. It would be set in modern day and would involve combo based sword and gunplay.
