Although there were some exceptions with "Halo" or "Goldeneye" in the title, I didn't care much for shooters. However, with Bioshock, Painkiller, and with the addition of role-playing elements to form the "RPS," I'm starting to like a lot more of them and I'm really looking forward to Bulletstorm, Vanquish, and--new to me--my first playthrough of Deus Ex! Also, I will be playing through some PC valve shooters...maybe with a mouse and keyboard, I'll finally get into Half-Life.
Also, Sports games. I liked the original NBA Jam on my SNES, and renting the ocasional Nintendo sports title (and buying Mario Kart, of course...are racing games considered sports games?) I never cared for the realistic sim type, such as Madden...but with EA remaking NBA Jam (Hells yeah!!!) and Nintendo releasing a collection of Mario Sports games, instead of one at a time (which is what always stopped me from buying a few of them, like Hoops and Tenis), I'm looking forward to some over-the-top action that kind of resembles sports. I should probably give "Punch Out!" a try, since it's a reborn classic and all....
Also...Mario Sports Mix has Beach Hockey...with explosions. And that's pretty awesome.
Fighters. I just never really got into them...except for Smash Bros. What can I say, I'm a Nintendo Nerd. I just love the spin they put on each genre they dip their franchises into. Take Smash Bros. for example...replacing combos with some light platforming, and allowing up to four players? No health bars, allowing you to use the stage to your advantage to keep yourself away from cliffs? For some reason, I liked these ideas better.
Recently, we picked up Tatsonoku vs. Capcom...and this may be what convinces me to get into more "classic" style fighters. My brother has the 360 version of Street Fighter 4, so I may have to get him to show me the ropes.
